Wrestlers’ dharna ends, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh will step down from responsibilities of the post till investigation

After getting the assurance of investigation from the Central Government, the wrestlers have ended their dharna. The wrestlers had a meeting with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur till late Friday night. During this, it was decided that the President of Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh would step down from the responsibilities of the post till the matter is investigated by the monitoring committee. The wrestlers had leveled allegations of sexual harassment and corruption against the Wrestling Federation of India and its President.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur held a press conference with the wrestlers late at night. During this, he said, ‘There was a continuous discussion with the players. All the players made serious allegations against the Wrestling Federation of India and what reforms they want, this thing also came to the fore. An Oversight Committee will be constituted, the names of whose members will be announced tomorrow. They will complete their investigation in the next 4 weeks.’

Union Minister Anurag Thakur said that till the completion of the investigation, a committee will look into the day-to-day activities. Till then, Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Singh will keep himself away from the day-to-day activities and cooperate in the investigation. At the same time, wrestler Bajrang Punia said, ‘Union Minister (Anurag Thakur) has given assurance to all the players. It has also been explained to everyone. We players are calling off our agitation because the government has given us assurance. We are confident that we will get justice.’

It is noteworthy that a 7-member committee was constituted on Friday to investigate the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, which also includes players like MC Mary Kom and Yogeshwar Dutt. Besides ace boxer Mary Kom and wrestler Yogeshwar, the panel also includes archer Dola Banerjee and Indian Weightlifting Federation President Sahdev Yadav. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the IOA’s Executive Council. The meeting was also attended by IOA President PT Usha and Joint Secretary Kalyan Choubey, besides sportspersons like Abhinav Bindra and Yogeshwar. Shiva Keshavan Special joined the meeting as an invitee.

Earlier, the protesting wrestlers had demanded formation of an inquiry committee from the IOA to look into the allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. A day before this, the wrestlers had threatened to register several FIRs against this sports administrator. In a letter to IOA president PT Usha, the wrestlers alleged financial irregularities on the part of the WFI. Apart from this, it was also claimed that the coach and sports science staff in the national camp are ‘absolutely incompetent’.
