Will Mamata be able to wear the crown of thorns?

Prashant Kishore has now changed his tune and has persuaded Didi that she has to begin muscle flexing and keep the pressure on the grand old party Congress not to get ahead of themselves. This happened after the Congress closed the gates on Prashant Kishore’s entry into the Congress and turned down his demand to induct him into the party and make him incharge of electoral and political strategy. Senior leaders asked if Kishore was going to handle all that is electoral and political then what would the politicians in the party do? A cheesed-off Prashant Kishore went on a hunting spree and ensured that a number of congress leaders from various states joined the Trinamool Congress in a bid to eventually showcase that Mamata is the real congress and the 100 plus years old congress haveli is now disintegrating and no amount of repairs can restore it.

The redoubtable Mamata Didi has set in motion the 2024 boxing bout declaring she is Mohammed Ali and way ahead of her rivals in the leadership and prime ministerial sweepstakes !!

In an interesting turn of events, her chief political advisor and main election strategist  Prashant Kishore is behaving like a spurned lover.

Not many moons ago, he had advised that there should be complete unity amongst opposition parties with a one-on-one contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition. This would have entailed a great deal of give and take, submerging individual egos, making sacrifices and so on.

The electoral arithmetic dictates that the secular vote not be divided.

Pumped up with her success in the West Bengal elections, Mamta is rallying around opposition leaders to come together and ensure that the congress is out of the larger grouping.

At the core of this is her dislike of Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi’s heir apparent who is being pushed by her to accept the presidentship of the party.

Senior leader Sharad Pawar also has no love lost for the Gandhi family and is using Mamta Banerjee to put pressure on the congress and evolve a grouping of like-minded opposition parties.

The latest to join the cabal is the Samajwadi Party’s young Turk Akhilesh Yadav who is giving the BJP a run for its money in Uttar Pradesh where the electoral sweepstakes are high and where he is looking more and more the real challenger.

Akhilesh who had an alliance with Rahul Gandhi in the last assembly elections has refused any truck with the congress and has made it clear he has no interest in doing business with Rahul Gandhi.

Whatever may be the moves being made by some opposition leaders the hard-cold reality of today’s politics is that in 200 seats in northern India the Congress is pitted against the BJP.

In the last Lok Sabha the BJP had scored optimum in these elections and now the numbers can only go down.

It is also a reality that the Congress by its very size and shape will emerge as the biggest party in terms of numbers vis a vis the regional parties which are only confined to their states.

And as every political analyst knows the buck finally stops where the numbers begin.

In this numbers game, Mamata , Sharad, Akhilesh, Kejriwal and others are creating hype and drama with the Lok Sabha elections still a long way off.

The fact is that opposition parties are doing business with the congress in parliament to take on the brute numbers of the BJP.

The fact also is that the UPA was no longer in existence after the defeat of the UPA government in 2014. Sonia Gandhi was the chairman and though she is still technically the congress president the UPA by any logic is no longer in existence. When she calls meetings of opposition leaders, they respond and come but the entire exercise is being undertaken to send home the signal that her attempts to pass on the baton to Rahul will not work as there is little acceptance for him both within the Congress and outside it.

But numbers are king and when the time comes the numbers will decide who sits on the throne.
