What The Stars Foretell!
Astrologers and soothsayers in Karnataka seem to be in great demand as politicians are flocking to them to consult on “lucky time and day” for filing nominations. Candidates are flocking to their respective religious gurus, seeking advice and blessings. Very few nominations were filed on the first day as it was the inauspicious Amavasya.
So deep is the belief in the stars, that even the announcements of the candidates is done after studying the conjunction of the stars. Both the Congress and the BJP have delayed the announcement of its final lists due to bad stars. Astrology plays a big part in the economy and politics of Karnataka. It is taught in colleges and universities and is often used by officials and corporate heads to plan important events and to make decisions. This, coming from the Infotech capital of India, is hard to believe.
The Sins Of The Past
Nemesis has finally caught up with Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. The court has set aside the Central Bureau of Investigation closure report which gave him a clean chit in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Tytler is accused of instigating a mob that led to the murder of three men who had taken shelter at a gurudwara on November 1, 1984.
Tytler has been given the cold shoulder by Sonia and Rahul and in a way he is persona non grata in the party’s Delhi circles since the last two years. He was shifted as the central observer for Odisha, which looking at the state of affairs of the party, is a punishment postings.
It is already accepted in the party circles that Tytler has outlived his stint and like the other Sikh riots tainted Congressmen will be consigned to the back pages of the party. It will be too big a burden to carry forth.
May A Thousand Lotuses Bloom
As a part of its awareness drive, BJP workers in Goa have been instructed to pin or paste the party symbol on residences and homes across Goa. The more lotuses a worker distributes, the more he or she will rise in the party ranks.
“We are highlighting the failures of the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government during our campaign now. The elections will be held next year or even this year. We want our voters to be made aware of how the Congress has let the country down,” Mesquita said.
Political analysts are finding it similar to Mao Tse Tung’s 1957 slogan, “Let a thousand flowers bloom”, where he had invited dissidents to voice their opinion. It is another fact that most of those who did were later imprisioned and also executed.
