What happened in Kashmir that Bharat Jodo Yatra stopped?
The Congress has alleged that security has been suddenly withdrawn from Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Kashmir. Rahul Gandhi himself also held a brief press conference and said, “Today, during the yatra, the police security system collapsed. After leaving the tunnel, the policemen were not seen. My security personnel said that we cannot go any further. I had to stop my yatra. Rest of the people were travelling. It is the responsibility of the administration to control the crowd.”
Speaking to the media in Anantnag, Rahul Gandhi said, “I think it is important that the police manage the crowd so that we can travel. It is very difficult for me to go against what my security personnel are recommending.” During the press conference, when Rahul Gandhi was asked whether he would continue his yatra despite the lapse in security, he said that our yatra will continue.
Earlier, Congress MP KC Venugopal tweeted, “The agencies concerned have not fixed the security here. There is no security official with the Bharat Jodo Yatra for the last 15 minutes. This is a serious lapse. Rahul Gandhi and others cannot walk without any security.”
Rahul Gandhi had to walk 11 kilometers on Friday, but he had to stop after walking hardly 500 meters. A senior Congress leader said, “For security reasons, we had to temporarily stop the yatra, as there was no security on the approved yatra route.”
Rajni Patil, Congress in-charge of J&K and Ladakh, tweeted that the J&K administration “failed to provide security to the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Shri Rahul Gandhi, which indicates an inappropriate attitude”.
Congress leaders alleged that after reaching Qazigund, Rahul Gandhi started walking towards Vesu in South Kashmir as planned, but Congress workers suddenly found that the outer cordon of security (which was supposed to be managed by J&K Police) disappeared.
