The Modi Maker

Updated: June 17, 2016 12:13 pm

Rajnath Singh has many stories to tell that he has faced in his political life as BJP Yuva Morcha National President, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, two-time National President of the BJP and now second-in-command in the Narendra Modi government as Minister of Home Affairs. It is noteworthy that it was Atal Behari Vajpayee, who coronated Rajnath Singh as a young, dynamic Chief Minister of UP and it was Rajnath’s resolute decision on deciding Narendra Modi as Prime Minister candidate, despite fierce opposition from Advani and his loyalists. As a CM of Uttar Pradesh, Rajnath took many strident decisions for the development of Uttar Pradesh. One of such decisions was he tried to restructure the reservation format of government jobs so that the backward classes among the SC and OBC get more scope. He holds credit for successfully installing the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in South India. During his term as President of the party, the record of a political party with 33 per cent posts allotted to women was made in the Bharatiya Janata Party. Being an ardent follower of Atal Behari Vajpayee, he is liberal and is accepted and praised even by the opponents. In UP, he took over the political stronghold of Vajpayee, i.e. Lucknow. So, one expects his leading role in the forthcoming assembly elections in UP. Rumours are making the rounds about his return to the biggest state of India, but he denies it with a mild laugh, saying there is no dearth of leadership in UP, and there would be no need of his going back as CM. Although, Amit Shah has already begun his strategy with his own trusted leaders, PM Modi is leaving no stone unturned in UP, including attending all the rallies along with Rajnath. For, Modi knows well that Rajnath has a big say in UP politics and his all strategies would fail without green signal from Rajnath. The party does not want to take any risk in the UP elections as senior ministers including Modi and Rajnath are Members of Parliament from UP.   A close confidant of RSS, Rajnath has always been a blue-eyed boy of senior Sangh leaders. But, like Vajpayee, Rajnath, beyond a point, never likes to contradict with Sangh decisions. A prophetic orator, Rajnath has a marvellous voice with profound understanding of ideological moorings of Hindutva, and of course Sanatan Dharma. He has too many supporters in Hindi heartland and the Sangh followers all over. But Rajnath, after reaching a height in politics, could not carry his strong followers and loyalists with him and that is the reason today he has been deserted by many of them. Reasons are many and in politics one has to face and follow the right and wrong decisions. Only time will tell why being holding the number two position in the government, he is not getting the command of the government after Modi.

However, Rajnath Singh has delivered on almost every front in Home Ministry. There were challenges before the ministry in the past and there are challenges now.  It’s such a large country that it’s only natural that some incidents will keep taking place, but one can say that in the past two years, whether it is terrorism, insurgency or Maoism, the government  has registered several successes on these fronts, as  on these three fronts, we are currently seeing the lowest levels of incidents. The internal security situation of the country, with special reference to terrorism, militancy and insurgency, showed significant improvement. The country is afflicted with Left Wing Extremist (LWE) menace, but in the last two years, several initiatives have been taken to root out this evil. In order to holistically address the LWE problem in an effective manner, National Policy and Action Plan has been formulated, adopting four-pronged strategy in the areas of security, development, ensuring rights & entitlement of local communities and management of public perception. It is worth mentioning here that the area of operations of Maoist cadres is not confined to one single state. It is often spread over two or more states. Therefore, better Inter-State coordination at various levels and on a number of aspects has been evolved. Securing the country’s borders against interests hostile to the country and putting in place the systems that are able to interdict such elements while facilitating legitimate trade and commerce are among the principal objectives of border management for Rajnath Singh. But the proper management of borders, which is vital to the national security, presents many challenges and includes coordination and concerted action by the administrative, diplomatic, security, intelligence, legal, regulatory and economic agencies of the country to secure the frontiers and serve its best interests. As part of the strategy to secure the borders as also to create infrastructure in the border areas of the country, several initiatives have been undertaken. Having said that, there is one thing that is needed to be done, i.e. police reforms. However, one can aptly say that Rajnath Singh is a decisive person and under his stewardship, Ministry of Home Affairs is charting a new course to success.
