I have seen snake gourd in few of Delhi markets. But I have never come across a tender, long, light green colour snake gourd. Instead I found dark green, wilted, broken gourds with big seeds and fibre protruding out. As a child whenever I visited my native place, it was very common to see farmers carrying snake gourds on their shoulders. At home they were grown in the backyard. There used to be more than a meter-long gourds hanging like snakes from the creeper. There was a unique smell if we happened to go near them. Surprisingly, the smell used to vanish upon cooking.
Many times we ignore snake gourd while purchasing vegetables. It may be because children do not like it. Probably, we have not explained them how beneficial it is to our body and the number of nutrients it contains.
The percentage of water content is more in snake gourd. It contains good amount of fibre and less calories. Those who are calorie conscious should definitely eat this vegetable.
It is important to eat this vegetable during summer season as it gives cooling effect to the body. It works like tonic to heart patients.
Snake gourd not only cures many diseases but also is capable of preventing many. It has antibiotic properties that give strength to the body and enhances the immune system. It works in combination with antioxidants like carotene and vitamin C, which protect the body from various viral and bacterial infections.
Snake gourd works wonders with children to keep them away from fevers. Boil the extract of snake gourd and coriander and give it to the patient thrice a day. This can bring down the fever.
Snake gourd is beneficial to diabetic patients too. If you include it in your diet it can satiate the feeling of thirst. It can even reduce the body weight in type 2 diabetes.
For palpitation, chest pain, jaundice take the leaf extract and give thrice two spoons daily. The problem will be reduced gradually.
For good digestion, dried snake gourd extract is very beneficial. It should be taken empty stomach.
To get rid of dandruff you can apply a healthy amount of its juice into your scalp and leave it for half an hour and wash it off. Snake gourd juice usually stimulates the body to boost fluid production and moisturizes the scalp.

Snake gourd can be cooked in a number of varieties. Delicious, mouth-watering recipes can be made. A simple raita using curd, coriander and curry patta can be very appetising and healthy. So, it is time you should immediately include snake guard in your daily diet.
