Secularist Mulayam Singh bats for cow killing ban

Updated: December 11, 2015 5:28 pm

Samajwadi Party national president Mulayam Singh Yadav has said he would take up the issue of dwindling population of cows with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also lauded senior party functionary and UP minister Azam Khan for opposing cow slaughter.

“I remember an instance when we came to know about cow slaughter at a certain place,” Mulayam told the media after a puja ceremony in Lucknow. “Azam and I went there and ensured that the practice was stopped. We were the first to speak against cow slaughter.”

He said Khan had worked a lot for the protection of cows and his efforts should be appreciated. Mulayam said every family should breed one cow.

“When I was coming to attend the function, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav told me that the government has sanctioned a grant of Rs 10 lakh for Kanha Upvan,” he said. Situated on the Lucknow-Kanpur road, Kanha Upvan is a shelter for unclaimed cows. He said the Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh was committed to encouraging dairy farming and was doing everything possible to contribute towards increasing the cattle population in the state. “I’ve always encouraged the rearing of cattle,” he said, adding that Prateek (his younger son) and his team are also working in this direction.

Such care for cows from secularists would irk the ‘secularists” who on the basis of one incident in Dadri have declared war against Modi accusing him of creating a climate of intolerance. They forgot or possibly intentionally ignored the fact that there was no riot by Muslims in reaction to Dadri killing. Otherwise smallest incident leads to a communal strife. Likewise when a young Muslim carpenter fled Dadri recently with a young Brahmin girl, there was no skirmish.

There is more tolerance than the Modi-haters let us believe!
