Railways’ double standards: Parliamentarians continue to enjoy concession; No to sr. citizens!

Updated: July 23, 2022 11:05 am

The Indian railways, applying two sets of rules, has ended concessions given to elderly people, whereas it has not done so with parliamentarians. Before the Covid-19 phase, there was a 50% discount on train tickets for women above 58 years and 40% for men above 60 years. This facility was closed during Covid-19 and now closed forever.

The Railway Minister has given a long and wide account for this–that how much loss was caused to the Railways every year by this concession. In 2021-22, railways saved Rs 3400 crore by not giving this exemption to the elderly. Well, it is good that the Railways saved such a whopping amount. But railway facilities to MPs continue till now. Why? Why are these facilities not being closed? The Railway Minister did not even tell any accounts of them!

Now, take a look here. The sitting MP has the facility of free travel in first AC with his wife or husband. The former MP has a similar facility with his wife or husband in the second AC and alone in the first AC. The funny thing is that this facility did not stop even during the time of Covid-19. It is another matter that the central government pays this money to the Railways. But, whose money does the central government pay? It is only taxpayers’ (your) money.

The information received through RTI shows that in the last five years, the government has spent Rs 62 crore on rail travels of MPs and former MPs. Rs 35.21 crore were spent on rail travel of sitting MPs from 2017-18 to 2021-22 and Rs 26.82 crore for rail travel of former MPs.
