Phool Makhane

Popped lotus seeds are known as phool makhane and these seeds are edible.   They have a bitter centre core and the outer membrane removed and are puffed just like popcorn. They are also known as fox nut, gorgon nut, makhana and Lotus seeds. They come from a plant the genus Euryale.They are highly nutritious fully organic non-cereal food, which is extensively grown in the stagnant water.  They are significant in religious ceremonies in India. They are popular food taken during the fasting.

They are a good source of protein, carbohydrates, fibre, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. High in fibre and low in calories, they enable weight loss. They are gluten free, protein rich and high in carbo-hydrates.Its health benefits are superior to those of dryfruits such as almonds and walnuts.

Lotus seed contains abundant magnesium in it.  Magnesium improves the blood circulation, oxygen and nutrients.  The nutrition like folate and magnesium reduce the risk of heart diseases. Lotus seeds are beneficial to those suffering from high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity due to their high magnesium and low sodium content.
