“People Of Bengal Want A Faithful Party That Can Work For Their Uplift”
Bharatiya Janata Party President, West Bengal, Rahul Sinha spoke candidly to Joydeep Dasgupta on a wide range of issues from state politics to organizational structuring. Excerpts:
In the recent Lok Sabha polls Bharatiya Janata Party in Bengal has tripled the vote share from six per cent to 17 per cent. Can we say that the BJP is emerging as the most powerful political party in the state?
People haves already accepted Bharatiya Janata Party as the main opposition and in 2016 it wil emerge as the most powerful political party in Bengal with clear mandate. The Trinamool Congress’ government in West Bengal has failed totally. Trinamool Congress is doing what the earlier CPIM government did. In simple words Trinamool Congress is just following in the Left front footsteps.
What do you think led to the surfacing of Bharatiya Janata Party in the state?
There is no productive industrial and education policy in the state. Health system has already collapsed. Wide spread gundaraj, real estate mafia, syndicate culture are booming and the farmers of the state are crying. All this is pushing Bengal backward. Cases of rapes and women harassment are increasing day by day. Trinamool Congress M.P Tapas Pal endorses rape, inciting party cadres to do rape with girls from opposition parties and the woman Chief Minister is silent. These are the main reasons because of which people want a faithful party that can work for their uplift.
So, you say you can be trusted by people and you will lead a parivartan in Bengal.
People in the state are not happy. People have seen the rule of Congress both in the state and at the Centre. After 34 years of Leftist misrule in the state, people with hope voted for Trinamool Congress but within three years the Trinamool too had failed and started showing its true colour. People are looking for an option in the state and Bharatiya Janata Party can give what they want. People also want their active participation in the party, which can be witnessed every day large with number of people are joining the party from various sections of the society. Muslims of the state too are joining the party in a large number. Therefore, I can say with full confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party will as a major political force in the state in the coming years.
As you said many people are joining the party, what specific measures are you taking to filter them into the party fold?
We have alerted our leadership at all levels about the people whom we are giving the membership. First and foremost thing we look in a member is his public image. If anyone does not have a good image in the society then we don’t give him or her the membership.
Do you provide any training for the members?
We have designed a special training module for our members. Once the membership is given, the person has to go through the different levels of training. Firstly, we want to know why he or she wants to join the BJP. Secondly, he or she is trained and made aware of the party’s tradition from Jana Sangh, about the founders, leaders and culture of the party. Thirdly, we made him or her aware of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s policies towards all sectors which include economic policy, social policy, educational policy, industrial policy, health policy, agricultural policy and finally a question and answer session, where anyone can ask any kind of query and clarify the confusion.
What measures have you taken to increase the vote share in the state and to strengthen the party in the state?
We have been strengthening our organisational structure at all levels starting from below to upper level. On the surface level, we are strengthening our party booth wise, and directly one-on-one communication with people are held. Inside, our IT cell is working round the clock, reaching out to the people, particularly the youth through social media.
How important is Rashtriya Swaya-msevak Sangh in Bengal?
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is not just important for Bengal but also for the whole country. It is the world’s biggest social organisation. It creates a real man with a true sense of culture and tradition, one who is accountable to society, modern in approach and can carry Indian tradition and discipline together. This approach of man making approach is not even possible in government system. It is, therefore, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is important.
Is the Modi wave working in West Bengal?
Indeed, it is the Narendra Modi wave that is working everywhere. He has a clear vision. The clear vision and practical approach are what we have witnessed from his speech from Lal Quila on the occasion of Independence Day. It was for the first time that a PM spoke from his heart. Previous Prime Ministers always delivered a written speech drafted for them by secretaries with some new policies and perks to be announced. But this time, Narendra Modi broke this tradition and just spoke what he felt good for the nation and the people.
How will you define Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal?
Bharatiya Janata Party is the only political party in the country or we can say in the world for which the country comes first. Bharatiya Janata Party is not individual or organisational centric. It is centralised on nation. Here every single member is a member of a big family which worships the great nation called “Bharat”.
How do you rate Mamata Banerjee as leader and Chief Minister of the state?
Mamata Banerjee is a total failure. Her policies and working structure have failed in the state. She is sweating now as she has not been able to come up to the expectations of the people. Industries are going away from the state; there is no security for women. Everything has failed and is collapsing. Bharatiya Janata Party is the only option now.
