Odisha, WB on high alert as Cycolne Amphan likely to intensify in next six hours

The Extremely Severe Cyclonic storm ” AMPHAN” (pronounced as UM-PUN) over central parts of South Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moved nearly northtwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 18th May, 2020, as per IMD, Amaravathi, Andhra Pradesh.

This is over west-central and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal near latitude 13.2°N and longitude 86.3°E, about 790 km south of Paradip (Odisha), 940 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1060 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).

Rain or thundershowers very  likely to occur at a few places over coastatal Andhrapradesh and Yanam during next 24 hours. Heavy rainfall likely to occur a at one or two places over North coastal Andhra pradesh and Yanam during next 24 hours, as per the IMD, Amaravathi, AP.

Meanwhile, Director General of NDRF S N Pradhan has said that the force is fully prepared in view of Cyclone Amphan. He said, a total of 37 teams are being deployed in Odisha and West Bengal. Out of these 17 teams will be on standby.

Mr Pradhan said, in Odisha 12 teams will be deployed in 7 districts and in West Bengal 10 teams will be deployed in 6 districts. He said, some teams have reached and some are about to reach by evening. The NDRF DG said, the teams which have reached have started awareness drive. He said, the cyclone in the time of COVID has posed a double challenge. He added that NDRF is coordinating with state agencies and local and district administration.
