The country’s largest power generator NTPC Ltd said it is looking to add capacity in a phased manner over the next few years. This is in line with the Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) projection of thermal capacity addition in the next five years. “We have consistently said that we will have 2,000¬2,500 Megawatt capacity every year,” NTPC BSE Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh said. The company currently has a capacity of nearly 24,000 MW under construction and according to a NTPC spokesperson, the company looks to bring that up over a period of five to six years. CEA, in its plan for the sector till 2022, had said the country will not need any new thermal power capacity and around 50,000 MW capacity that is under construction will only come up in the next five years.
