Non-human Equality

India that is Bharat

SATIRICUS is a human being. He believes in democracy, so he is a democratic human being, for whom all beings are equal. But do those ‘beings’ include non-human beings? Well, now, he is not sure such inclusion is humanly possible. On the other hand he recalls that in George Orwell’s famous novel Stalin the Pig declares all animals are equal but some are more equal. Would such a declaration include us biped animals? Satiricus does not know. But it seems some people in Spain do.

For a little Spanish town with a population of 800 has recently recognised dogs and cats as “non-human residents” and given them similar rights as men and women. Well, now, isn’t that wonderful news for the cats and the dogs? But would this equality not adversely affect every dog’s inalienable right to chase every cat? Also, what about the rats? Are they not equally non-human? Will they not smell a rat if they are not given the same rights? Otherwise they might demand minority status with the special right to bell at least anti-social elements among the cats.
