Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is a herb that has numerous health benefits.  It has been in medicinal use for the past many centuries in India.  Ayurveda has extensively used it to cure many liver disorders and other ailments.

It is known as bhat-kataiya in Hindi and its scientific name is Silybummarianum.  This plant gets its name from white fluid that comes out when the leaves of this plant are crushed.

Today milk thistle is scientifically proved to be one of the best medicinal herb and one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in the world. It is number one recommended natural herb for liver disorders.  In Europe it is a prescribed medication. Apart from liver it has many other health benefits.

  • It increases the production of bile and therefore, eases constipation in individuals who are vulnerable to it.
  • It has been proved that milk thistle helps to lower the levels of cholesterol in the body thus improving the functioning of the heart.
  • Milk thistle extract is prescribed to treat mushroom poisoning, Alcoholic cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, drug and alcohol induced liver damage.
  • Milk thistle acts like an antioxidant. It must be consumed orally and eating it helps nourish and rejuvenate dead cells.
  • A lot of people are battling with Haemorrhoid and milk thistle can be a good remedy for them. Piles are swollen varicosities that usually emerge in the anal area. Consuming milk thistle gives relief to the swelling.
