Medicinal Benefits Of Coconut

Coconut has an importnt place in the traditional life style of India. It is considered as Kalpa vriksha, the tree that belongs to the heaven. This tree provides us water, food, shelter and other essencial items required in our day to day life. It is a boon for those who live in hot weather conditions. Each and every part of the tree is useful and provides livelihood in some or the other form to the mankind. It is extensively used in marriages, religious and other social gatherings.

                The green coconut is tender, consists of water as well as fleshy, jelly like substance which is called spoon coconut. The fruit is covered with strong fiber, which turns to brown when the fruit gets ripened. With salts and minerals in abundance the green coconuts are harvested for its cool and energising water. Especially in summers it keeps the body cool and relieves from thirst.

  1. Coconut water contain Glucose, minerals like potassium & sodium, vitamins, protiens and antioxidants making it a complete nutritious food source. It has immense medicinal properties. In the absence of glucose-drip, a patient can be given coconut water for his fast recovery as it gets dissolved in blood quickly. It can even be safely given to small children. It gets digested easily.
  2. Tender coconut water gives relief from scanty urination, dehydration due to diarrhea and when one is in the condition of shock.
  3. Blood and pus in the motion, burning sensation due to piles, hiper-acidity, vomitings, and giddiness can be controlled by giving tender coconut water. It is a good antidot for cholera. It infuses the potassium lost due to diarrhea and vomitings.
  4. In contagious fevers tender coconut water helps in the free flow of urination by which harmful toxins are removed from the body.
  5. The jelly or the spoon coconut contains essencial oils, fats and nutrition which do not let the food to decay in the instestines. More over it does not let the harmful agents to enter the body and is considered as a very nutritious diet.
  6. Owing to its analgesic properties it works as a good pain killer and can be applied over the bruises.
  7. Fully ripened coconut consists of oil which helps on controlling diarrhea and expels the worms from the stomach. Controls the acids in the stomach by supressing them and acts as good medicine for acidity.
  8. Gives relief from pain in the chest and dry cough. Grated coconut with jaggery if taken can give relief from joint pains. Those who are suffering from high cholesterol are not advised to take coconut.
  9. The white substance in the coconut is used in culinery purposes. Milk which can be derived from coconut contains 17 per cent of fat. After extracting the milk, the husk is used as fodder for cattle. The tip of the coconut flower is used as vegetable like cabbage and the base of it is used for making liquor (alcohol).
  10. Coconut is the main ingredient in a variety of dishes prepared in south India. The dried coconut has got a longer shelf-life than the raw one.
  11. Coconut oil is the main cooking medium in Kerala. Oil is obtained from dry coconut. It has got a number of medicinal properties. It gives cooling effect when applied over burns, bruises etc. Acts as a good conditioner for hair and is used in many beauty products like shampoos, soaps etc.
  12. The outer portion of the coconut, the fiber (coir) is used for ropes, mats, mattresses and as cooking medium.

                The trunk of the tree is used for the construction of houses and also used as bridge to cross small canals. Before the starting of any function Hindus offer coconut to lord Ganesh. The breaking of coconut in temples and religious functions signifies detachment of evil thoughts, purifying our souls before we prostrate in front of the lord. Coconuts are widely found in Kerala, coastal areas of Andhra and Tamil Nadu. People living in Kerala and Tamil Nadu extensively use coconuts in their daily diet. The flowers and leaves are very artistically decorated in the marriage functions.
