Manipur: Big blow to Nitish’s party, 5 JDU MLAs join BJP

JDU has got a big setback in Manipur. Five out of its 6 MLAs have joined BJP. This political activity has brought political upheaval in both Manipur and Bihar. On one hand JDU is calling it unconstitutional, on the other, BJP is welcoming those MLAs with open heart.

In a statement issued, Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary K Meghjit Singh has said that the merger of five JDU MLAs with BJP has been accepted. It has been accepted under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution. Now there is a big setback for JDU in Manipur because the party won 6 out of 38 seats it contested in the assembly elections held this year. But now out of those 6 MLAs, only one is left with JDU and the remaining five have joined BJP.

The move by the MLAs comes after Nitish Kumar dumped the BJP and joined forces with Tejashwi Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Congress and other parties, displacing the BJP from the co-pilot’s seat in Bihar. Soon after the valid merger of Manipur JD(U) MLAs with the BJP, Party Senior leader and MP Sushil Modi took a jibe at the Bihar chief minister saying states like Manipur and Arunachal have become “JD(U)-mukt”.
