Large economies of the world in crisis due to drought, such a situation has never happened in the last 500 years
In the Northern Hemisphere (the part of Earth that is north of the equator), severe drought is spreading from farms in California to waterways in Europe and China. Supply chains have been affected due to drought and prices of food items have gone up. Due to this, the pressure on the global trading system has also increased.
According to China’s National Climate Center, parts of China have had to deal with prolonged heat waves. This is the first time this has happened since 1961. Due to the lack of hydropower, manufacturing in the industries has stopped. Andrea Toretti, a climate scientist at the European Commission’s Joint Research Center, said that Spain, Portugal, France and Italy have never experienced such droughts in the last 500 years. According to a study by the University of California, Los Angeles, such a drought in the American West is the worst in 1,200 years.
What is more, climate scientists attribute the drought to La Nia. La Nia is a cyclical pattern of cold water in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This pushes the winds to the north, causing less rainfall in parts of Europe, America and Asia. The United Nations says that the number of droughts worldwide has increased by 29% since 2000 due to land degradation and climate change.
O to this drought, the economies of large countries of the world are suffering. Power generation, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism industries have been badly affected. Agriculture forecasts that farmers in the Americas will lose more than 40% of their cotton crops, while Spanish olive-oil crops in Europe are expected to be reduced by up to a third in hot and dry conditions.
