Knowing the Game

Today’s education system, offers students a structured program, focused on gaining skills that are economically relevant. There is value to this approach, certainly. Yet, this academic experience rarely prepares a person for assuming leadership roles. Most of the schools, do not teach the ‘rules of the game’; knowledge that can help you rise to positions of leadership and impact more quickly within an organisation. The basic assumption of the author of the book Rules of the Game, is that anything in life can be made interesting and enjoyable if we consider it a game, while making an attempt to comprehend and learn the rules that govern the game. While people go about their daily activities, they sometimes fail to notice a pattern in the steps, which they take over a period of time. Someone who has an eye for detail can understand this pattern and deduce a set of rules that could explain the pattern in these moves. Most of people’s learning comes from understanding of such patterns and internalising those.

This method of systematic studying of any concept, over the time or over a number of subjects while aiming to find a pattern, is used in all scientific experiments which have led to acclaimed discoveries. In this book, author has applied this method to understand the importance of early development of certain concepts to help propel long-term career acceleration.

Once people realise that career management is a game, they have to go about accustoming themselves to the rules of that game. Unfortunately, most people do not think that managing careers is a game and therefore, do not invest in learning the rules. Dr. Sumit D Chowdhury, author of the book is a multifaceted business and technical leader, having worked in leadership roles in many multi-nationals. An M. S. and Ph.D in Management from Carnegie Mellon and B. Tech from IIT Kanpur, he brings a wealth of practical experience from his personal life and career.

In a nutshell, this book serves as an excellent supplement for anyone about to begin a corporate career. It is a valuable read for those who start their journey intent on achieving goals.
