Kashmiri Parties Coy Of BJP

Updated: January 31, 2015 7:30 am

Omar Abdullah, the outgoing Chief Minister and leader of the National Conference (NC) wrote a letter to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) offering it unconditional support and also wrote to the Governor about his support to PDP. This means that PDP’s number will swell to 43. It can form the government by getting five independents. Congress with 12 MLAs has been beseeching the PDP to take its support. But, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the most seasoned politician in the Valley knows that taking support from both NC and Congress will be inviting trouble. Most of his time will be lost in managing grievances and tussles and worst it would make Centre his enemy. No state government there can afford to annoy the Centre beyond a point. Sources said that Mufti is also conscious of the fact that the BJP with 25 seats from Jammu will be a formidable Opposition and can also create almost unmanageable trouble by ranging Jammu against his government.

Trucks carrying supplies to the Valley can be blockaded and Mufti could be blocked from coming to Jammu. Worse, if the Centre provides help in development of the Jammu region, Mufti would face trouble in the Valley. The Hurriyat and separatists will try bamboozle this coalition to implement its directives, which could give an opportunity to the Centre to dissolve the government. Such eventualities are keeping PDP from forming the government. The BJP, like a bride, is sitting pretty and watching suitors duel.
