“Hospitals are ready with beds, isolation wards, oxygen, medicines and doctors” — Dr SCL Gupta
“The 2nd wave was very cruel and we have seen deaths happening. Being a doctor I was helpless at that time. We tried hard to save precious lives but we failed. Few lives we saved and that is what we learnt in 2nd wave that the readiness and quick coordination with all the staff is necessary,” said Dr SCL Gupta in an interview to Ashok Kumar. Excerpts:
Omicron is rising day by day. Do you feel hospitals are ready to face the third wave?
Hospitals are ready to tackle the rising cases of Omicron as we have become more expert after 2nd wave of Delta variant where the crisis were at a large scale. Now hospitals are ready to help people at large to fight against the omicron. Hospitals are ready with beds, Isolation wards, oxygen, medicines and doctors and nurses.
You must have gained a lot of practical experience in handling covid patients. Can you brief us your arrangements for third wave?
The 2nd wave was very cruel and we have seen deaths happening. Being a doctor I was helpless at that time. We tried hard to save precious lives but we failed. Few lives we saved and that is what we learnt in 2nd wave that the readiness and quick coordination with all the staff is necessary. The arrangements like wards, Isolation rooms and we have now our own oxygen plant in the hospital. Vaccinations are also happening at large. We are screening patients to identify the infected ones. We are treating the patients with all the precautions .Social distancing , Masks and sanitization is there which plays an important role to break the chain.
In 2nd wave there was a huge crisis for oxygen. Are your hospital ready to provide health infra and medicines for new variants?
After seeing oxygen crisis in 2nd wave our hospital took the decision to install oxygen plant in the hospital which can supply required oxygen to all the beds of the hospital .Batra hospital is ready to tackle the third wave because this time we have oxygen plant, beds are ready and medicines and other things required are there.
Vaccination above 15 and under 18 has started now. Don’t you feel the third wave has started and all children cannot be covered so quickly?
Vaccination drive for children is going on. This initiative started from 3rd of January. The main aim of this drive is to cover children against infection .Parents are booking slots and also walkin is happening which will increase in coming days .Vaccination will help but the main things like social distancing, Mask and sanitization is key.
What do you expect from central and state govt’s to face the third wave?
Central and state govt’s should work in collaboration to tackle the third wave i.e omicron. Curfew should be imposed with proper guidelines which should be followed by everbody. We can see people in groups everywhere which should be banned with immediate effect. Metros and buses should be planned in such a way that people can travel with ease and all precautions. Weekly markets ,Malls and social gatherings should be banned. The main aim is to break the chain which could be achieved by proper implementation of guidelines.
What are the precautions the general public must take to avoid infection and what to do if one is tested Covid positive?
General public should follow all the precautions like Social distancing, Masks and sanitization .People should also follow guidelines as advised by govt from time to time.People should avoid going out if it is not necessary .Social gatherings should be avoided and most important is people with comorbidities ,Old age and children should stay at home.If someone is having symptoms or is positive immediately contact the doctors and follow the protocol as directed.
General public is hereby advised to go for their vaccinations, anyone who’s due for their second dose also should get it done in due time. Children between 15-18 years are advised to undergo their vaccinations as soon as possible.Anyone having any doubts about the vaccinations should get rid of such thoughts & get themselves vaccinated immediately & be safe from the Virus.
