Health And Hygiene

Updated: November 12, 2013 3:44 pm

Unhygienic conditions, laziness and ignorance are the root cause for the origin of germs and thus lead to various diseases. The most common of these infections are common cold and flu.

During monsoons, we need to be extra careful so as to avoid dreadful diseases like dengue, Malaria, typhoid etc. You may be surprised to know that we are attacked by 18 types of germs per minute according to a survey conducted by a US health magazine. Most affected are small children, elderly and pregnant women. They have a high risk of getting infected by these diseases, while most healthy adults can fight off the infections.

These above diseases are caused by viruses, which attacks us especially, when we are in public places.

►           Suppose you are in a restaurant the first thing you are going to touch, is the menu card. Just imagine, how many people might have held it before you. So first place your order and then wash your hands for having your meal. Thorough hand washing is the best way to defend against the spread of infectious diseases. Most people do not wash hands long enough to kill germs. It is suggested that it takes 15 to 20 seconds of vigorous hand washing with soap and water to effectively kill germs. Findings from a study conducted by US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, shows that most people wash their hands for about six seconds.

►           If you go to an ordinary hotel, the water provided to you may contain bacteria like E.coli. This may lead you to various stomach infections, diarrhea etc. So; one has to be careful with the water that is served. Hence, it is always better to buy mineral water.

►           If you are using the ketchup bottle, hold it with disposable napkins that are kept on the table.

►           If you are in office or hotel, it is better to carry a hand sanitizer.

►           If you are using the soap dispenser in the office wash room, pour little water over it and then use it.

►           Coming to house hold hygiene, kitchen is a place most likely to breed germs like E.coli and salmonella. The dish washing sponge and the kitchen rag are the carriers of maximum bacteria. Change the dish washing sponge regularly and don’t let them sit in water for long periods. An alternative to napkins would be to use disposable anti- bacterial wipes. The other areas most likely to be contaminated in kitchen are microwave, refrigerator, water dispenser, rubber gaskets of the blenders etc. One should use anti-bacterial wipes to wipe down these items frequently. You can even use disinfectant spray.

►           Wash your bed linens once a week to get rid of the germs in the bedroom.

►           Change hand towels regularly or use disposable ones to avoid any risk of transferring germs. Wash them frequently and let them dry in between uses.

►           If someone in your house is down with flu, let them use disposable cups and utensils to minimise the risk of spreading germs.
