Generous Minister

Updated: March 26, 2011 2:19 pm

Tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay is well known for his simplicity and generous behaviour. This was observed recently when he was meeting some media persons just outside the Parliament after the Finance Minister delivered his budget speech. Many other ministers were also interacting with media persons there. Suddenly, a security vehicle speedily came in and passed though the gathering crushing the feet of an old lady media person. While everyone just ignored it, Subodh Kant Sahay personally took care of her injury. He took her to a doctor and when the lab boy was not seen there, he himself went to call him so that X-Ray could be performed. Having seen this munificence on part of the minister, the journalist was overwhelmed with appreciation.

Mallya Ignored

The budget session of Parliament is going on with full steam, but many MPs appear to be careless regarding their presence in both the houses. One of them is the Independent Rajya Sabha member Vijay Mallya. He was seen in the house once only and that too on the day discussion on S-band allocation was going on. He came in his well-known lavish get-up. He tended to look very significant and greeted other members irrespective of their parties. But many members tried to avoid him. Mallya also went to the seat of the Prime Minister to say hello to him, but the PM didn’t even bother to look at him.

Unaffected Mamta Didi

Parliament is quite famous for hullabaloo and noisy disturbances. The budget session is also not an exception. During the discussion on the Rail Budget the other day, Rail Minister Mamata Banerjee had to answer the house. She was sitting on her chair, maintaining silence, while the members of the Opposition were shouting slogans and those of the ruling were praising the rail budget. But during the entire noisy session, which caused the house to be adjourned, Mamata Didi remained impervious and was seen busy in drawing sketches on a paper.

Ever since the Padma Vibhusan has been awarded to Dr Sitakant Mahapatra, the doyen of Odiya literature, he has become the cynosure of all the political parties. A little bird has chirped that the BJD and the Congress have both approached him for future berths in the Rajya Sabha. In fact, it is said that the Congress party may consider him for a berth from some other state.

Even the other political parties have made a beeline at his door, but the retired civil servant who has stayed away from politics all along, in spite of having served under more then five Chief Ministers is keeping his fingers crossed. It is heard that a new Save Orissa front is in the offing, which will be headed by him and will work as a pressure group.
