Congress decimated in Goa

Updated: September 14, 2022 5:37 pm

Just two months after it appeared that the Congress had thwarted a defection attempt, eight of its eleven MLAs, led by its two top leaders DigambarKamat and Michael Lobo, defected to the BJP, leaving the opposition party with just three representatives in the House of 40. The Goa Congress party is in the middle of Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat JodoYatra” (Unite India March), at which the BJP has been taking jabs: “Jodo (Unite) your party first,” and the mass defection is a 2019 repeat for the party. Eight MLAs defecting collectively, or two thirds of the party’s strength, prevents them from being disqualified under the anti-defection law.
