Big blow to AAP in Delhi Mayor Election, Mayor’s election could not be held even today

Updated: February 6, 2023 3:26 pm

What was feared has happened. The mayor’s election has been postponed once again in Delhi. The presiding officer adjourned the House to the next date amid uproar by corporators from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Earlier on January 6 and 24, the elections had to be postponed after huge uproar. On Monday, apart from the Alderman, there was an uproar over the voting of two AAP MLAs, who were convicted by the court.

MCD election results came in the capital Delhi on December 7, but till date the mayor has not been elected. For the third time in a month, MCD proceedings were disrupted today due to uproar. Actually, the presiding officer canceled the voting rights of two MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party, on which an uproar started. Earlier on January 6 and January 24, the attempt was also unsuccessful. Ahead of the MCD Mayor’s election today, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged that the BJP has directed its party councilors to stop the re-election. In a tweet, Sisodia said, ‘…they (BJP corporators) have been asked to create ruckus on some pretext as soon as the proceedings of the House begin. The Presiding Officer will then adjourn the House sine die. LG will again fix the date after 20 days.’ Now once again the file will go to LG and a new date will come on his approval. It seems the mayoral election has been postponed for at least 15 days.

BJP and Aam Aadmi Party councilors started raising slogans today and there was a ruckus in the House. In fact, the presiding officer said in the MCD House that the Alderman i.e. nominated councilor can participate in the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Standing Committee members. AAP councilors opposed it. The meeting was adjourned due to the uproar.

Even before the elections, the war of words between the Aam Aadmi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party intensified today. AAP leader Atishi attacked the BJP in a press conference. Atishi said that on the contrary, the thief scolded the policeman? What would be more ridiculous than this that the BJP, which is buying MLAs, MPs, corporators, is saying that AAP is trying to buy BJP corporators. I want to tell the BJP, stop making excuses, let the mayor’s election be held, and respect the mandate from Delhi.’ Atishi further said that for the last 10 years, where the BJP loses the elections, it forms the government through the back door. First, they illegally elected nominated members and presiding officers. Last time also they got the election postponed by its presiding officer.
