Azam Khan’s son Abdullah stripped off legislature; Membership cancelled after two-year sentence
Azam Khan and his family are getting many shocks one after the other. Assembly membership of SP MLA Abdullah Azam Khan from Rampur Swar Assembly has been cancelled on Wednesday. The Assembly Secretariat has declared the seat of Abdullah Azam vacant. Notably, Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam was the MLA from Swar Tanda seat. Two days ago, Moradabad court sentenced him to two years imprisonment. After which today a notification was issued by the Assembly Secretariat that the seat has been vacated.
It may be noted that Abdullah Khan’s father Azam Khan was also an elected MLA from Rampur Vidhan Sabha seat, but he was found guilty last year in a case of derogatory remarks. Azam Khan was sentenced to three years imprisonment in that case, due to which his membership has also been cancelled. This is happening for the first time in 25 years when no member of the Azam family will participate in the assembly.
So, what was the case? For information, 15 years ago, on January 29, 2008, the Chhajlait police stopped the car of former minister Azam Khan for checking, which infuriated his supporters. After this, the workers of Samajwadi Party created a ruckus. In this uproar, nine people including Abdullah were made accused. The police had registered a case against all the people who created ruckus in this matter for obstructing government work and inciting the crowd.
What is the way forward now? For now, Azam Khan’s sons can challenge in the sessions court for relief, where the legislature can be saved if the MP-MLA court’s decision is stayed. If the session court does not give stay, then the door of the High Court will have to be knocked. In such a situation, even if a stay is granted by the High Court, his membership can be saved.
Here it is worth mentioning that Fasahat Ali Khan alias Shanu, who criticised Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav over Azam, also took a big step last year. He joined BJP in December 2022. After this, Azam Khan suffered a setback in the Rampur Sadar by-election and BJP candidate Akash Saxena won this seat.
