Arjuna Tree

Arjuna tree has a significant place in Indian medicine as well as  mythology since ancient times.  It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda to cure numerous health conditions.  Now it is scientifically proved to be very affective & safe for human consumption and incorporated into the modern health care products. The tree is compared with the great hero of the Mahabharata Arjuna  and so goes the name. Arjuna was known to protect his family the same way this tree is known to protect us from all diseases specially the heart. This is the only herb that is known to be tremendously good to heart.

There are three kinds of Arjuna trees, red, black and white. Mostly white Arjuna tree is used for medicinal purpose.  Ayurveda medicine is prepared for various diseases and these medicines are available over the counter. This tree is vividly found in Himalayan region and in Deccan plateau in India.  The bark of the tree contains minerals like zinc, calcium, aluminium and magnesium.

The extract of bark of the tree is used to strengthen the heart muscles. It can effectively improve cardiovascular health and is considered as tonic for the heart. The extract is given to regularise the heartbeat, improving cardiac functions in persons who have recently undergone cardiac trauma.

Make decoction with Arjuna bark by boiling in cow milk and give to heart patient.  This should be taken empty stomach, early in the morning.

Arjuna can be given to asthma patients.  Make fine powder of the bark and sprinkle over the kheer a pinch of it and consume it. Or you can mix the powder with hot water or milk and can consume it.

The powder of the bark mixed with honey is given to join the fractured bones quickly.

  • Arjuna contains calcium that helps in giving relief in osteoporosis.


Arjuna is skin friendly. One can get rid of pimples by applying bark powder added with little honey on the spot.

  • The decoction of the bark cures burn injuries and boils.
  • For any type of blister, boil or sore make paste of bark and apply it on the effected part of the body.
  • Finely crushed tree bark mixed with honey can be applied topically to remove tanning of facial skin.

Add Arjuna bark powder, neem leaves and tulsi leaves to water and boil till ¼th of the solution is left. Filter the decoction and drink to get relief from cough and sinusitis.

Arjuna extract can be filtered and used as ear drops against ear ifections.

Arjuna acids have anti-oxidative properties that are similar to vitamin c.

  • Owing to its anti – oxidant properties, it controls blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Arjuna is known to flush out small stones that are formed in the kidneys and hamper the functioning of the kidneys. Arjuna bark is to be boiled and filtered and given to the patient. This will break down the stones into small pieces and flush them out through urine.

During Ganesh puja 21 types of leaves are offered to Lord Ganesh.  Arjuna leaf is one of them.
