Almonds are a great source of multiple nutrients and easy to carry. Nature has bound up essential health nutrients in a small pack in the shape of Almonds. It is amazing to know just how much goodness is packed inside a handful of almonds. They are a good source of vitamin E, fibre, copper, magnesium, phosphorous and riboflavin, this nut is a good source of mono-unsaturated fat. Almonds are known to help protect against cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. They are so versatile that they go with any Indian cuisine. As they can be used whole, roasted, chopped, blanched, or paste. You can have them spicy, sweet, tangy or plain. Almonds contain Omega fatty acids, that helps prevent skin problems, fertility etc. They are so unique that they provide essential minerals that are required for the bone health. Calcium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus have been implicated in maintaining bone mineral density.

Other Benefits of Almonds

►  Almonds are used in the preparation of many food items. Chocolate covered almonds contain zero calories under certain circumstances.

►  They are used in the beautification of our body. Almonds give nourishment to the skin too.

►  Make paste of almonds soaked over night put in a glass jar; add 5 drops of rose water and 15 drops of sandal scent. Apply this on face to avoid wrinkles.

►  Almond oil gives strength to the hair roots and stops untimely greying.

►  It helps relieve tension and strengthens brain power.

►  Eating almonds along with black pepper helps correct speech problems, like stammering etc.

Health benefits of almonds are as follows

■    To keep yourself fit you can prepare the following avleha at home. Especially in winters it is very helpful in protecting you from common cold and cough by giving warmth to your body. Take 100 gm of each, almonds (soaked in water overnight, peeled and dried in sun), kishmis (raisins), dates, misri (candy sugar) and honey. Grind all the ingredients by adding honey and store this paste in a glass jar or bottle. Take one spoon early in the morning empty stomach daily. .

■    Vitamin E:-Almonds are an excellent source of vitamin E, an antioxidant that has been shown to decrease the risk of certain forms of Cancer, heart disease and cataract.

■    Folic Acid: – Almonds make an important contribution to a diet adequate in folic acid (also known as vitamin B9,). Can reduce the risk of neural tube defects and is necessary for making red blood cells. It also prevents a heart disease and stroke.

■    Iron: – An ounce of almonds contains the recommended daily requirement of Iron. This essential mineral helps to carry oxygen to all the body cells and organs.

■    Zinc:-Aids in wound healing and is involved in protein metabolism. Zinc is also important in the development of the reproductive system.

■    Copper: – Almonds are a good source of copper. This essential mineral helps to keep the bones, blood vessels and nerves healthy.

■    Magnesium: – Almonds are an excellent source of magnesium, a mineral used in building bones, making protein, releasing energy from muscles and regulating body temperature. It is also needed for calcium and potassium balance in the body.

■    Phosphorous: – Almonds are a good source of phosphorous, the second most abundant mineral in the body. This mineral is needed for strong bones and teeth, and also helps the body digest proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

■    Phytochemicals:-Almonds like all other plant foods contain phytochemicals. These also have protective effects.

■ Eating almonds could prevent diabetes too. Almonds are cholesterol free compared to other nuts. Consuming the diet rich in almonds helps improve insulin sensitivity and decreases the LDL cholesterol level for those with pre diabetes condition ,in which people have blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes.
