Record 1,008 new covid cases reported in Maharashtra in a single day

Maharashtra saw a big jump in the number of coronavirus cases on Friday with 1,008 persons testing positive, the highest in a day so far, taking the tally of cases to 11,506.

State health department said 26 COVID-19 patients died yesterday taking the death toll to 485.

Municipal Corporation of Mumbai said, out of total number of reported new cases, Mumbai alone contributed 751 cases.

Similarly out of 26 deaths reported, five were from Mumbai. 106 patients including 95 from Mumbai were discharged on Friday.

Health minister Rajesh Tope said that 83 per cent of coronavirus patients in in the state are asymptomatic.

He said 20 per cent of them have recovered.

In a release, the minister said that the mortality rate of the epidemic has come down to 3.5 per cent in the state, while the doubling rate of patients is more than the national average.

Mr Tope said of the 36 districts of Maharashtra, 14 are in red zone, signifying high rate of spread of infection, 16 in the orange and six in the green zone.

The minister said a special 2,000-bed facility has been created in Mumbai.

Where if needed senior citizens with comorbidities living in densely populated areas could be quarantined after screening.

The state has 733 containment zones at present.
