The Power Behind Modi’s Triumph
Narendra Modi in his address to newly elected BJP and NDA Members of Parliament on May 25, 2019, in Parliament Hall, said that we have reached here due to efforts of four generations. There is no doubt about Modi’s charismatic leadership quality which made this consecutive victory of BJP in General Election 2019 possible. But, as rightly emphasized by him, it would be an illusion if you think that it is the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only. The fact is that BJP was founded in 1980; so how come four generations are involved in the success of BJP? The Bharatiya Janata Party is an offshoot of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) after a long experimentation in Indian politics. RSS ensures that all its allies and promoted organisations work for the success of its political wing.
You never know, the person sitting next to you might be in the process of garnering your favour in favour of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India. Narendra Modi is the brand promoted nationwide for the mission initiated long back by visionaries like Dr. Balkrishna Shivaram Moonje and his staunch follower Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. The script of present flamboyant victory of Bharatiya Janata Party was written almost 100 years back when Dr. Moonje started working for Hindu Mahasabha and handed over the torch of reincarnation of Hindu Civilisation to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
It might be quite amazing and attractive scene to many to see BJP coming to the power consecutively second time with thumping unprecedented majority in 2019 General Election; but very few could realize sacrifice of millions of dedicated swayamsevaks behind the present triumph. Balasaheb Deshpande, Laxman Vaman Paranjape, Madhav Sadashiv Golwarlkar, M. D. Devras, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, Atal Bihari Bajpayi, Rajju Bhaiya, K. S. Sudarshan, Mohan Bhagawat, Vakil Saheb (Lakshamrao Inamdar), Arvind Maniar and Dinanath Batra are just a few names to mention here who are in the foundation of the present rock-solid state of Bharatiya Janata Party.
The 2019 Lok Sabha elections’ results are just an iceberg of the efforts put in for the success of Narendra Modi. Dedicated swayamsevaks (RSS members) hardly reveal as a BJP activist but they definitely try to create a positive environment giving logical arguments to the opponents in the society. Political discussions are common these days at every nook and corner may it be a tea or coffee shop, club meeting, informal office meetings, kitty parties, eateries, lunch break, or even dinner time in a house.
BJP is just an offshoot of RSS like many others. RSS ensures success for its political wing by deploying all its other branches to work for BJP openly and secretly as well. This is the biggest difference between BJP and other political parties. For example Congress is a political entity in itself but it does not have any active parent or subordinate body to work for it the way RSS does it for BJP.
Amit Shah narrated in his victory speech at BJP headquarters on 23rd May evening that this is the triumph of 110 million BJP workers. This was a modest comment by the winning party president from a public platform. In fact, there are at least 200 million dedicated and committed workers of BJP in the country but they may not like to disclose their identity publicly. One fact worth mentioning here is that all RSS activists are BJP workers; but, at the same time, it is not necessary that all BJP workers should be RSS activists. There are more than thirty important entities promoted by RSS working in the area of social, tribal, economical, religious, political, educational and philosophical concern. One seasoned Pracharak of RSS takes on the responsibility of strengthening and nurturing one of the organisations promoted by the Sangh Parivar.
Several Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram activists working in tribal areas of North East states are murdered by the extremists every year. Similarly, many BJP workers are killed for political vendetta in the states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and other states where BJP is not in power. ABVP activists are always prone to such attacks for their over exposure in political field.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
Staunch RSS activist Balraj Madhok founded ABVP in 1948 and got it formally registered on July 9, 1949. Later, Yeshwantrao Kelkar contributed significantly to build the ABVP in its present influential form. Its main objective was to erect a counter body to tackle Communist and Congress run students unions in important universities of India. The ABVP could successfully leave behind National Student Union of India (NSUI), Students Federation of India (SFI) and All India Students Federation (AISF). Presently, ABVP is the strongest and largest student organisation in India having a membership base of over 4 million students i.e. almost 10 percent of the total students’ enrollment in higher education. 15 million first time voters (between age group of 18-19 years) participated in this General Election of 2019. ABVP has played a crucial role in garnering support for Modi across the nation from students aging between 18 to 25 years. It runs Yuva Vikas Kendra, Students Experience in Interstate Living and other important projects for students engaged in higher education. They are actively engaged in career counselling and development; runs series of lectures to prepare students to take jobs and better career prospects. Ultimately, ABVP members become strong supporter of BJP. This does not remain confined to an individual but its ideology spreads in the family and friends of the activist. There is no organization in the country to match the strength of ABVP to work for a political party at the ground level such as door to door campaigning, polling booth management, network building, etc.
Akhil Bharatiya Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram
Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram is an RSS response to Christian Missionaries working for converting Scheduled Tribes to Christianity in India. By and large, converted citizens were committed vote bank of Congress and Communist parties. One of the basic motives of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was to lead the nation with Hindu ideology. With this long term vision the Ashram started setting up health centres, temples, schools, and community centres in remote tribal area where the Central and State Governments have never thought of extending any basic facilities to the aborigines. The Ashram initiated the project called Ghar Wapsi (bringing back converted Christians to the original religion). The highest rate of conversion is observed in the North East region where mass conversions have taken place. There are families where one brother is follower of natural religion and the other is converted to Christianity. With the support of RSS and Orissa State Government, Ramakant Keshav Deshpande also known as Balasaheb Deshpande founded Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram at Jashpur in 1952. The activities of Ashram initiated from a very small tribal zone have now become a pan India mission. RSS has devoted thousands of its activists working full time in the tribal zone to achieve the mission. No other party has such a strong hold in tribal area in present times. The Ashram activities are ultimately guided to ensure that Narendra Modi leads the country again.
Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRSM)
All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organisation (AIFUCTO) was founded in 1949 at Nowgong College in Assam. The AIFUCTO was the body mainly controlled by Communist ideology driven leaders. It became a strong pressure group to deal with the Central and State Governments in terms of pay commissions and working conditions for university and college teacher. RSS thinkers and followers were having stiff differences with the office bearers and leaders of AIFUCTO. Consequently, RSS floated its own teachers’ body in the name of Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh in the year 1988. ABRSM states on its website that, “In this background no political party can control or direct us to do this or not. Their control is totally no existent here. We believe that in some circumstances we can even influence them if necessary.” However, the fact is that it is an offshoot of RSS to strengthen Narendra Modi at the Centre.
The Higher Education nodal bodies such as UGC, AICTE, NCTE, NBA, NAAC, etc. were controlled and dominated by the Communists and Congress oriented academicians. ABRSM ensures that such control is diluted and academicians having hoary culture (nationalist approach) should be promoted on these bodies’ executive councils and advisories.
The victory of Bharatiya Janata Party is attributed to day and night efforts of ABRSM too. The teachers’ body has tried to put its impact on more than 2 million teachers of primary, secondary and higher education. The basic slogan is ‘Nation First’.
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)
The Ram Rath Yatra lead by the BJP president Lal Krishna Advani during September – October 1990 was a great political landmark for the party. Vishwa Hindu Parishad was side by side to the BJP to make this Rath Yatra a grand success. In fact, this Chariot procession was the foundation of Vajpayee Government at the Centre.
The VHP was founded by M. S. Golwarlkar and S. S. Apte in association with Hindu monk Swami Chinmayananda on 29th August, 1964 (Shri Krishna Janmashtami) at Bombay. The word Hindu is having a broader sense i.e. people of Hindustan; and Hindu religion embraces all faiths of Indian origin such as Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism and tribal religions. “It was further decided that it would be a non-political organisation and that no office bearer of any political party shall be simultaneously an office bearer in the Parishad.” However, the attainment of basic objective of the Parishad was almost impossible without having political power at the Centre. Hence, strengthening political wing of the RSS was in the background of VHP.
Over the passage of time VHP got huge support from India and world over. As per an estimate, there are more than 15 million members of VHP across the globe as on today. This branch of RSS is financially very sound and supports BJP from the front and back. The biggest setback to the VHP workers was given by Mulayam Singh Yadav Government post Babri Mosque demolition in 1992. Hundreds of Kar Sevaks were shot dead by police and Para-military forces in Ayodhya.
Followers and active members of VHP have one ultimate dream i.e. to ensure BJP in Indian Parliament with full majority on its own. The workers of VHP are dedicated relentlessly to the victory of BJP.
The victory of Narendra Modi as the leader of Bharatiya Janata Party is a combined effor of several organisations of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, dedicated workers and salient supporters of these organisations over a period of almost 100 years right from the establishment of Hindu Mahasabha. Dr. Hedgewar’s effort was just a symbol of big chunk of Hindu nationalist in pre-independent India. The RSS kept on floating several entities one after another to have a complete hold of its ideology in all walks of life across the nation. It may be a strange revelation to many that the RSS has floated its Muslim wing known as Muslim Rashtriya Manch way back in 2002 at the initiative of K. S. Sudarshan. Similarly, there is another religious outfit called Rashtriya Sikh Sangat which works for BJP silently. The triumph of Narendra Modi is a herculean effort of RSS and its several sub units putting together.
Big success comes from combining small and tiny efforts. Persistence and perseverance is another key mantra for success. Vision always stands for long terms. Today’s guided effort will mark a success over a long period of time. Narendra Modi is groomed under very disciplined and structured programmes of Sangh Parivar. BJP is the part of long term vision of RSS which has become a reality just because of relentless and guided efforts of dedicated visionaries.
