Yardsticks for Yogi
After a massive mandate to BJP in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath has become the Man of the Moment in the political arena of India. However, a saffron-clad monk holding political office is not new by itself. Uma Bharti preceded Yogi Adityanath, on whom people of the state have all their expectations, with all eyes are now focussed on him as to how he delivers. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state of India, having the highest Budget, next to the Union of India. Also UP has been the political ground of many important leaders of India. In fact, the state has given birth to many political revolutions of different political parties. Starting from Mandal movement to Ram Mandir movement, UP has provided impetus and fillip to many important leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Ram Manohar Lohia, Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, Chandra Sekhar, Murli Manohar Joshi, Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh and now PM Narendra Modi as MP from Varanasi. BJP’s political odyssey was very evident from Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir movement and Kalyan Singh was the Hindu mascot then. After Kalyan Singh, the BJP could not succeed in UP but its political journey received a spectacular growth along the length and breadth of India. Lotus bloomed from southern state of Karnataka to Manipur in the North-East with an impressive vote percentage. Till 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the party was still untouchable to large masses, and BJP was known as a Hindu party having major upper caste voters as its base. But the perception about the BJP under Narendra Modi’s stewardship has undergone a massive sea-change, as was witnessed in the recent UP election. The BJP is now well accepted by the youth, women and the minorities under the principle of Sab ka Saath, Sab ka Vikas. The development politics of Narendra Modi is bearing fruits now at the Centre with good governance in different states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, etc. The Modi mantra for good governance has attracted the common man and the divisive politics has been thrown into the dustbin of history. The selection of Yogi as CM of Uttar Pradesh is a well thought-out strategy, which has been accepted by the people, whose choice he may be.
Yogi Adityanath has now an ardent task before him to fulfil the expectations of the people of the state so as to bring it out from the Bimaru status. Not only law and order, the state needs serious attention to many important sectors like agriculture, industry, power, health, education and infrastructure. When the Yogi government took over, the state was in total disarray and the administration was in a complete mess due to the faulty policies of the previous governments ruled by Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav. So, Yogi has to fulfil the aspirations of the common man as announced in the BJP manifesto, and he has to play an important role so the party could win the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. An unblemished saint, well educated, having good political experience as an active parliamentarian, Yogi is a strong leader. Age is at his side to prove his capability and compatibility in the administration, Yogi has to take the state to new heights, as Yogi, in terms of good governance, has got his competitors from other BJP-ruled states such as Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Dr Raman Singh and Devendra Fadnavis. As Narendra Modi is a hard task master, Yogi has to stand on his toes, as the PMO would be breathing down his neck to monitor the state government’s style of functioning. Yogi has to take very watchful decisions–what to do and what not to do. If he becomes successful in decision making, then he would be another national leader in making to perform a bigger role. One hopes Yogi becomes a successful CM of UP.
