Raising the question
India is an ancient country and according to some estimates, Indian civilization is about five thousand years of age. Therefore, it is natural that its society will also be very old and complex. Throughout its long period of history, India has witnessed and received several waves of immigrants such as Aryans, Muslims etc. These people brought with themselves their own ethnic varieties and cultures and contributed to India’s diversity, richness and vitality. Therefore, Indian society is a complex mix of diverse cultures, people, beliefs and languages which may have come from anywhere but now is a part of this vast country. This complexity and richness gives Indian society a unique appearance of a very vibrant and colourful cultural country. But the very same complexity brings with itself complex nature of social problems and issues. In fact every society of the world has their social issues unique to their society. So does Indian society.
The present political system of India ensures all its citizens- justice, liberty, equality and fraternity in the entire social, economic and political spheres of human activity. The framework of politics in a democratic society is characterised by the general and special features of the interaction between politics and social structure. The general feature of politics in all democratic societies is that it intervenes to influence society and that it also reflects the social reality. In post-Independence era, all basic changes in Indian society are initiated by the state. The Indian state is the agency of change in society, and for performing such a role the state seeks its legitimacy through the democratic verdict of the people. Politics in India is a pre-eminent factor in societal changes and this alone is responsible for the complexity of the interactions between polities and society.

In this regard the book, Challenges of Contemporary lndia- Polity, Justice, Education, Empowerment and Judiciary is an exclusive piece of creation on complexities of Indian social structure and its actual operation in the democratic process, in the politics of today and tomorrow with a thin silver line to overcome the facts of social life and bare truths of politics. In contemporary India, the large masses of the people suffer from social and economic discriminations and they look to the State functionaries for protection and survival while those who belong to the vulnerable strata of society seek protection from the state, the privileged and powerful seek to control state institutions and resources for protection and promotion of their material interests.
In a nutshell this book makes it quite clear that the promises and commitment that India made to her people at the time of independence in different walks of life ranging from polity to the betterment of social justice, education, women empowerment, judicial impartiality and upcoming socio-political problems still remains elusive and are incomplete and urgent tasks that we have to finish soon. While being an interesting read for readers, the book gives an all encompassing view of the problems we are facing right now in our country and proposes solution for the same.
