Muslim Scenario In Bengal
The highly politicised police of West Bengal rarely register complaints by Hindus against Muslims for fear of alienating their bosses. West Bengal is a failed state today where even the police and judiciary are finding it difficult to operate. It is not that the radical Islamic elements were in control during the 34 years of Left government, however, the extent to which the Trinamool government is supporting radicals and causing a breakdown of law and order is unprecedented
The killing fields for non-Muslims are just not in Syria or Nigeria. The ISIS and Boko Haram are not the only ones that abduct and rape non-Muslim girls. Nor is it just in Pakistan and Bangladesh that Hindus are living as second class citizens.
West Bengal, headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has abjectly given in to militant and aggressive Islamists. The State is heading for another bloody partition. There has been a steep shift in the demographic status in 10 districts, most of them bordering Bangladesh. Officially, the Muslim population has gone up from 19 per cent at the time of partition in 1947 to 27 per cent in the 2011 Census. These are 2011 figures; there has been a phenomenal alarming jump in the last four years. However, in the districts of Murshidabad, Malda, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur, Muslims are already in a majority.
In village after village, as the population of Muslims increases rapidly, there is an exodus of Hindus, they are being forced to flee; their lands are being taken over, their cattle stolen, their homes are being burnt, and their women are being raped mercilessly. The mushrooming of madrasas and mosques, with the abject support of the State administration, is adding fuel to the fire. The extent of the atrocities is such that no single day goes by without cases being reported. Violent incidents against Hindus are becoming so common that it’s hard to keep track of them. Radical Islam is strangling West Bengal.
The Alarm Bells are Ringing
The 2011 Census has thrown up alarming demographic facts. While the pan India Hindu population has dipped by 0.7 per cent, in Bengal the dip is much higher at 1.94 per cent. Correspondingly, the Muslim population has increased by 0.8 per cent on a national level, while in Bengal the growth is more than double- 1.77 per cent. Of the total population of 9.12 crores, Hindus still comprise a big majority of 6.4 crore people or 70.53 per cent of the population as against the Muslims population of 2.4 crores or 27.01 per cent. However, if compared to the 2001 Census data, the asymmetrical spread of Bengal’s population by religion can be clearly seen.
Three districts which the Muslims have overshot the Hindus are Murshidabad (47 lakh Muslims; 23 lakh Hindus), Malda (20 lakh Muslims; 19 lakh Hindus) and North Dinajpur (15 lakh Muslims; 14 lakh Hindus). Anatanag district in Jammu and Kashmir has the highest number of Muslims by percentage; Murshidabad has the highest by headcount.
Around 12 Parliament seats in the bordering districts of the State are dominated by Muslims. They now form 25-30 per cent of the voters in the entire state and constitute 42 per cent of the population in 140 of the West Bengal’s 341 developmental blocks. With the 27 per cent Muslim population, there is pressure on the elected representatives to tip the scales toward the advancement of an Islamist agenda and make Muslims the most privileged class in West Bengal. With 59 Muslim MLAs, the West Bengal assembly also has the dubious distinction of having the has the highest number of MLAs, 120, with pending criminal cases against them. In the border district of Murshidabad, which is over 63 per cent Muslim, an undeclared de facto Sharia is imposed on all residents. The vast majority of political candidates, elected officials and law enforcement leadership are Muslim and the economic prospects for Hindus dim as Muslims refuse to patronise non-Muslim businesses. Why is the Muslim population in Bengal growing at a much higher pace than the national average? And why is the Hindu population declining? It is the sheer appeasement policies of the CPM and the Trinamool regime had led to unchecked illegal infiltration of Bangladeshis for the sheer reasons of developing vote banks. This is now being reflected in the skewed census ratios.
The highly politicised police of the state rarely register complaints by Hindus against Muslims for fear of alienating their bosses. West Bengal is a failed state today where even the police and judiciary are finding it difficult to operate. It is not that the radical Islamic elements were in control during the 34 years of Left government, however, the extent to which the Trinamool government is supporting radicals and causing a breakdown of law and order is unprecedented.
The Saudi-funded terrorist group Jamaat-ul-Mujahadeen has a major base in West Bengal, including bomb-manufacturing units, and has used Wahhabi money to build mosques throughout the state. The security agencies have sounded the alert on the mushrooming Muslim organisations, many of them in the form of NGOs with more of political-religious agenda and cross border sources of funding. According to the West Bengal Minority Affairs Department, 650 Islamist NGOs have cropped up between 2012 and 2014 and the number is growing. Throughout the state, the muzzezin’s call to prayer is blasted by loudspeaker from early in the morning to late at night and some thorough fares in the Muslim districts of Kolkata are closed to all traffic for Friday prayers.
Mamata Banerjee knows that the Muslims were largely responsible for her election victory; hence she has made substantial paybacks. For Mamata, the equation is simple, woo the Muslims and victory is hers. Her bouquet of goodies include the approval and validation of nearly 10,000 academic degrees from Saudi-funded and controlled madrasas, which were previously unrecognized. The Government passed an Amendment Bill according Urdu status of second official language in the areas having 10 per cent or more Urdu speaking population. A third Haj House was announced and 5 acres of land have been allotted at new town Rajarhat for Haj pilgrims. The government has distributed free bicycles and rail passes to female Muslim students and laptops to Muslim boys.In April 2013, Mamata’s government sanctioned a monthly salary to all Imams and Muezzins in the state. When this was declared unconstitutional by the High Court, 22 organisations of Imams took to the streets to protest. Her promise of establishing Muslim medical, technical and nursing schools with subsidies for Muslim students will soon see the light of day. A Medical College at Diamond Harbour and a Polytechnic at Baruipore with reservation for Muslims and hostels for Muslim girls is being set up. The government is planning an exclusive Islamic township. The state government has included 30 more Muslim groups in the Muslim OBC category.
In June 2014, Mamata made a highly questionable decision of appointing Ahmed Hassan Imran to the Rajya Sabha. Imran is a founder and self-acclaimed member of the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), a recognised terrorist organization banned by the Indian government and many other nations. The adverse reports from the Intelligence Bureau that he had instigated violence against Hindus, including participation in the Kolkata and Canning riots and sheltering known terrorists was ignored. Hassan Imran has been an ardent advocate for the establishment of Shariah Law in the Muslim dominated areas of Bengal. Hassan has close ties to local Islamist leaders and has worked with Jamaat-e-Islami, a pro-Saudi jihadist group supported by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence. Mamata’s Trinamool Congress ignored all this and now he sits in the Rajya Sabha. She is likely to send more Islamists to serve in parliament in the future.
Every now and then, Mamata Banerjee dons a hijab and goes to meet the voters she is cultivating. She has gone to the extent of publicly reciting the Kalima Shahadat, the Islamic conversion prayer, in front of an audience of imams. She also made an Eid announcement after offering namaz “wait for my book on Urdu Shayari”. In 2014, she refused to meet the US charge d’affaires Kathleen Stephens, during her visit to Kolkata, because of the objections from Mohammed Noor-Ur-Rehman Barkat, Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has printed textbooks in which the revolt of freedom fighters like Khudiram Bose, Jatindranath Mukherjee and Prafulla Chaki have been termed as extremist and terrorist.
It is alleged that the Chief Minister’s office has directed the police chiefs in the districts to deliver sweets, cash and flowers to Imams during Eid. She had thwarted the initial attempts by the Centre to facilitate investigations into the Burdwan blasts. It took her a fortnight to hold a press conference on the blasts, where she castigated the Centre’s offer of investigative intervention.
This breakdown of governance is clearly visible when Didi described various events from rape to assaults on journalists to even the shooting and killing of a policeman during the local by-poll election process at a local college as “fabricated”. Delhi is no more the ‘Rape capital’ of India, it is Kolkata, where fear stalks women in the streets.
Many aware Muslims too are critical about her stance. Police officer Nazrul Islam wrote a book last year “What Muslims Should Do,” in which he castigated Mamata for the un-Islamic stipend to imams, her headgear and for her inappropriate use of Muslim terms. His book has sold 25,000 copies but the Trinamool shrugs it off.
Both Mamata and the previous Left claim that the state’s Muslims made immense progress under their rule—Bengal is ranked first when it comes to development of Muslims. If this is true than why does the West Bengal government need to give such massive resource allocations to Muslims alone?
The NIA had informed the West Bengal government of 500 recognised and 4,000 unrecognised Madrassas that are engaged in indoctrination, recruitment, training and sheltering of jihadis. According to the NIA, there are 58 terror modules operating in the state. The objective of the jihadi outfits in West Bengal is to provide a safe conduit for manpower resources to al-Qaeda and ISIS. It is not as if this phenomenon is confined to the rural areas. Even Kolkata is under the threat of Islamic violence. Last year, the Sealdah Railway Police got suspicious when they found a large group of 62 Muslim boys, all very young who were being escorted by one Imam at the railway station. When asked, the Imam said that the kids were being taken to a madrasa in Satara, Maharashtra from a madrasa in Purnea, Bihar, and could only produce papers for 30 of the children. The police lodged the children and the Imam in a safe place pending enquiries about the undocumented children. Very soon, a big mob mobilised after nearly two dozen mosques as well as some madrasas made announcements on their loudspeakers. The mob seized the occasion to spread pandemonium, buses and cars were burned, women were harassed, and roads were blockaded. The protestors raised the cry of “Allahu Akbar” and “Free Yakub Memon”.
The earlier CPM, and the present TMC governments, both were never serious about having closed boundaries with Bangladesh. The presence of the enclaves in North Bengal has given them a potent excuse. The signing of the last accord will pave the way for a seamless fencing of the border.
Bangladesh is also home to many extremist organisations that have a role in the maniacal Islamist frenzy that has gripped Bengal. The countryside is agog with potential terrorists, armed with provocative texts and explosives. A few of the he terrorist organisations of Bangladesh, which have developed proxy roots in West Bengal during the regime of TMC government, are: Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami Bangladesh (HuJI-B), Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh (JMJB), Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Purba Bangla Communist Party (PBCP), Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS). The State does not have an Anti-Terrorist Squad like Mumbai. The government could not even allot land for the establishment of National Security Guard Hub. The entire police force is staffed with people loyal to the present ruling class. The neutrality and efficiency of the police has been questioned even by the High Court in a number of cases recently. This has resulted in a steep increase of 30 per cent in the crime rate, every second criminal in the State is a Muslim.
Regular media reports claim that there has been sharp increase in incidents like Hindu girls getting kidnapped, trafficked into sexual slavery and taken as second or third wives of Muslim men. Muslims with political backing are actively found rioting during Hindu festivals, destruction of Temples and desecration of Deities at large scale. No sooner does a mosque come up in a village, then it becomes impossible for a Durga Puja procession to pass anywhere near it; the problem becomes compounded when mosques come up right on the main road of a village. The rape of a catholic nun in the border town of Ranaghatin March this year, by the Bangladeshi criminal Sikandar Sheikh and his gang, the threat by SIMI to assassinate a leading monk,Swami Pradiptanandaji Maharaj of Bharat Sevashram Sangha and many other incidents are proof of the growing criminalisation.
In March 2013, the government allowed a massive rally at the Maidan which was called by various groups including the All Bengal Minority Council, the All Bengal Minority Youth Federation, the Madrassa Students Union, the Muslim Think Tank and the All Bengal Imam Muezzin Association. The rally was explicitly against India’s liberation of Bangladesh and in support of Pakistan and the war criminals already convicted. Students of madrassas were conspicuous at the gathering. The Jamaat-e-Islami and other jihadists thundered that West Bengal would be “cleansed” of the enemy of Islam. Incidentally, it was from this same ground Maidan in August 1946 that the call for ‘direct action’ was given by the Muslim League. During the 2014 general elections, the Jammat-e-Islami had openly canvassed for the TMC—Abdul Barik Biswas, was seen on a dais with Trinamool MLA actress Debasree Roy.
The Muslims of Bengal are getting more united day by day, whereas the Hindus are being fragmented both socially and politically. Even the so-called Bhadralok or the Sushil Samaj class of Bengalis are bowing down to the Islamist forces in Bengal. Not a word was uttered when Taslima Nasreen was driven out. The rampaging in Statesman house over an article, the open protest against the High Court verdict on Cow Slaughter, the violation of the 65 decibel parameter of the use of loudspeakers from Mosques, the withdrawal of the vital Pulse Polio and family planning programmes from many areas, the condolence prayer for Osama Bin Laden in Kolkata’s heartland etc. are a few examples where no voices were raised.
It was said that what Kolkata thinks today, Indian thinks tomorrow. God save India!
