Progressing With The Times

Updated: May 29, 2015 11:08 pm

THE more things change, the more they remain the same. Take, for instance, Gandhiji’s “vendors of Christianity”. Time was when they could sell Christianity for the price of a fistful of rice. So their customers were called “rice Christians”. But now that Christianity has developed into a Multi-National Company (MNC) the price has to become much more attractive. So Satiricus was not surprised to see the Pope tweeting the other day that “philanthropy is the best means of evangelism”. Rather, he is impressed to see Christianity Incorporated progressing with the times, and yet keeping to a time-tested business tactic. The product remains the same, but the packaging becomes more modern. See? Wasn’t secular Satiricus right when he said the more Christian things change, the more they remain the same?
