Daggubati Couple All Set To Leave Congress

Updated: March 1, 2014 4:35 pm

The Union Minister of State Daggubati Purandeswari and her husband Dr Daggubati Venkateswara Rao, who is presently MLA, are reportedly ready to leave Congress party. She is the daughter of Telugu Desam Party founder NT Rama Rao. According to sources, they are actively considering to choose between options of joining Telugu Desam Party or BJP.

For some time, her brother and film artist Nandamuri Balakrishina, who is brother-in-law of TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu and playing active role in TDP, has been making hectic efforts to bring them back to TDP with a mission to bring back all ‘Nandamuri family’ members together in the party. Earlier, Dr Venkateswara Rao played active role in the party during NT Rama Rao regime and was minister in latter’s cabinet and was also elected to Rajya Sabha.

Some BJP leaders are inviting them to join their party. Particularly some senior RSS leaders prefer them to join BJP. During the NDA regime, being Rajya Sabha member, Dr Venkateswara Rao was with BJP for some time and cultivated close association with BJP and RSS leaders.

After TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu extended outside support to NDA government Daggubati left TDP. As a result, even now, they are hesitating to return to TDP even though Chandrababu Naidu reportedly expressing willingness to accommodate them in the party honourably.

As family members attempt to bring a truce between NTR son-in-laws Venkateswara Rao and Chandrababu Naidu, they failed in 2004 due to hardened stand taken at that time by Naidu. Venkateswara Rao with his wife joined Congress. Luckily, Congress offered Lok Sabha seat to Purandeswari, besides MLA seat to Rao and both of them were elected. Within a short period, she succeeded in making her mark in the Parliament. Congress president Sonia Gandhi was impressed with her performance and inducted her into union cabinet.

In view of mute fortunes for Congress party in Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh, following party’s decision to go ahead with bifurcation of the state, for quite some time there has been a news making round that Daggubati couple are planning to leave the Congress Party. To strengthen this scuttlebutt, Daggubati has not been taking an active part in any of the party affairs. He has also not been participating in any of the Congress party programmes in recent times.

On February 7, taking part in Rajya Sabha elections in Hyderabad, Venkateswara Rao opted to openly express his dissent with state of affairs in the Congress party and utilised his franchise to vote for refutation. He said he informed the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and also PCC Chief Botsa Satyanarayana of his decision to vote for rejection, before he actually did that. With this entire episode we can arrive at a logical conclusion that Daggubati couple will not contest on Congress party ticket in the coming 2014 elections.

As a follow-up to Venkateswara Rao’s open rebellion with the party, Purandeswari dashed a letter to AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who is incharge for Andhra Pradesh Congress affairs, on the next day, making it clear that she will not contest in the coming elections as Congress candidate. In her letter she protested against reported telephone call she received from him on January 26, asking her to choose alternate constituency to contest in Lok Sabha elections.

Presently, she is representing Visakhapatnam constituency. But former minister and Rajya Sabha member T Subbarami Reddy has been openly claiming for a year that he will be contesting from this constituency in 2014 and the party will ask her to contest from some other constituency. Though he was re-nominated by the party for Rajya Sabha in the recent polls, he is still claiming that he will contest from Visakhapatnam. This makes her angry.
