The Goodness Of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has been in use for hundreds of years for its amazing healing qualities. I myself grew up using coconut oil. Whenever I or my siblings would get hurt while playing, we were told to apply coconut oil on the bruise. When applied on infections it forms a chemical layer protecting the affected part from dust, air, bacteria and fungus. It is most effective on bruises as it speeds up healing process by repairing damaged tissue. For all skin-related problems such as minor injuries, burns, cuts, scratches and shoe bite, coconut oil used to be the only treatment. Though it was specially brought for our hair care, it had its share of other benefits too.

Coconut oil contains anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It works wonders with all types of skin conditions. Massage coconut oil on your scalp to get a refreshing feeling after a tiresome day.

BENEFITS OF COCONUT OIL

■              Coconut oil helps treat various skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and other skin infections.

■              This oil is beneficial for the heart, as the saturated fat present in coconut oil is not harmful as is the case in other vegetable oils. It contains about 50 per cent of lauric acid which helps prevent various heart diseases. It does not lead to increase in LDL levels.

■              The fat in coconut oil gets used by the body as energy instead of being stored. So, normally people who use coconut oil regularly are not over weight.

■              Coconut oil provides one of the best natural essential nutrients to your hair. It aids healthy hair growth and provides a shiny complexion. Regular massaging of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of lice, dandruff and it works on your damaged hair as well.

■              Now scientists have found that coconut oil can control the bug behind tooth decay. It has been proven by them that coconut oil works against the sugar-loving bacterium that clings to teeth and produces acid that causes them to rot.

■              Take equal parts of baking soda and coconut oil and mix together. Store it in a refrigerator to keep in favourable consistency. This tooth paste will sparkle your teeth and prevents tooth decay.

■              Coconut oil has anti-aging and anti-wrinkle property. It delays wrinkles and sagging of skin which normally becomes prominent with age.

■              It has a cooling effect on the skin when applied on burns. It heals the burns and gradually removes the scars.

■              It forms the basic ingredient of many body care products such as soaps, lotions, creams etc.

■              Cooking food in omega6 vegetable oils produces a variety of toxic chemicals, as well as trans-fats. Frying not only destroys the anti-oxidants present in oil but also oxidizes the oil itself which causes worse problems for our body than trans-fats. Most of the oils are genetically modified including soybean, canola and corn oil. They are poly-saturated fats and are said to be the worst oils to cook with.

■              Coconut oil is the only oil that is stable enough to withstand the heat of cooking. It does not form harmful by-products when heated to normal cooking temperature like other vegetable oils do.

■              Coconut oil helps improve the digestive system and thus prevents many stomach and digestion-related problems. It helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. It increases body’s metabolism by removing stress on the pancreas. This process burns out more energy and helps obese people lose weight.

■              Pour a tablespoon of coconut oil into the blender as you finish off your smoothie.

■              Substitute coconut oil for butter in your baked goods.

■              Spread coconut oil in place of butter on your toast this is really nice topped with your favourite jam.
