Health Benefits Of Peaches

Peaches are distinctly coloured, delicious fruits with unique flavour and are available in plenty in summer months. They are very soft and fresh from inside and full of nutrition. All the health benefits of this fruit are hidden in the flesh of this wonderful fruit. These are one of the oldest known fruits to mankind. These fruits contain high levels of anti-oxidants and flavonoids, which fight against free radicals and protect the body from various diseases.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF PEACHES

■    Vitamin C content in peaches is very high as compared to other fruits. Vitamin C is essential for healthy teeth, bones, skin and boosts the immune system. It is also helpful in the absorption of iron in the blood stream. It even helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful free radicals.

      Consuming peaches has been known to cure scurvy (a disease caused due to the deficiency of Vitamin C) or at least help in providing relief from it.

■    Vitamin A and beta-carotene are also found in good amount in peaches. Beta-carotene is a precursor to Vitamin A and is known to play an important role in the body. It is helpful in treating high blood pressure, skin disorders, age-related macular degeneration, headache and many more diseases. Vitamin A is essential for vision, cell function, bone growth and strong immune system.

■    Apart from vitamins, peaches are also rich in iron and fluoride. Iron is helpful in treating anemia. It is a condition brought about by low levels of intake of iron. Fluoride helps in building stronger bones and teeth. It also prevents dental diseases.

■    Potassium is abundantly present in peaches, which is a heart healthy mineral and an important component of cell and body fluids. It is vital for maintaining blood pressure and regulating heart rate. Peaches are ideal for those who have arterial hypertension or coronary problems.

■    Fiber, which is essential for the digestive health, is present in very high levels in this small fruit. It prevents constipation and also ensures colon health. The high amount of water and dietary fiber present in the fruit give it its laxative effects. A high fiber diet, particularly one that is water -soluble fiber (such as the one present in peach) is associated with decreased risk of heart attacks, probably because presence of such water soluble fiber is known to lower cholesterol.

■    Consumption of peaches further helps in the prevention of tumors, gouts, rheumatism, de-worming of the intestines and also prevents the diseases associated with worm infestation.

■    Peaches are low in calories, saturated fat and sodium. So, if you are health conscious you can substitute them in place of high calorie diet.

■       Eating peaches contribute to the health of our skin too. The minerals and the macro-nutrients in peaches benefit our skin in many ways such as improving the look of our skin and also protecting it from many diseases.

OTHER BENEFITS OF PEACHES

►  When one feels the urge to eat something, we should pick up a fruit like peach which is low in calories, instead of junk food. This not only gives the health benefits of fruits but also helps in shedding those extra pounds—because now-a-days obesity is one of the main causes for many serious diseases and health problems. If the fresh fruits are not available you can even go for the dried fruit.

►  It is suggested that pregnant women should drink one glass of peach juice daily because of the content of iron in peaches, which protects from the pregnancy-induced anemia, fights fatigue ,provides a lot of nutrients to the unborn child and mother as well.

►  Peaches are used in variety of ways such as jam, jelly, juice and baby food and a variety of other food items including peach pickle.
