Blood Pressure

All of a sudden if you have weak and sinking feeling and do not feel like doing any work or feeling giddiness or severe headache especially at the back of the head, you should immediately go to the doctor and get your blood pressure checked. Because usually these are the symptoms that indicate low or high blood pressure. It is a simple and painless procedure that gives a lot of information about the heart and the condition of the blood vessels. The doctor measures the maximum pressure (systolic) and the lowest pressure (diastolic) made by the beating of the heart.

Systolic pressure is the maximum pressure in an artery at the moment when the heart is beating and pumping blood through the body. Diastolic pressure is the lowest pressure in an artery in the moments between beats when the heart is resting.

Both systolic and diastolic measurements are important if either one is raised it means you have high blood pressure. Blood pressure depends on the combination of two factors.

►           How forcefully the heart pumps the blood around the body.

►           How narrowed or relaxed your arteries .

The normal blood pressure is considered to be measured as 120 over 80 which is written as 120/80mmHg. There is a natural tendency for the blood pressure to rise with age due to the elasticity of the arterial system. Age is one of the factors that need to be taken into account in deciding whether a person’s blood pressure is too high. In general terms a people with blood pressure consistently above 140/85mmHg need treatment to lower their blood pressure.

People with slightly lower blood pressure may also need treatment if they have high risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Here are a few natural remedies to control your blood pressure

■             Crush five small cloves of garlic and mix in a small bowl of curd. Eating this mixture in the morning on an empty stomach will definitely lower the blood pressure levels. Care should be taken that no medicine should be taken at least for two hrs after this. This should not be done for more than five days in a row. Repeat this course, if necessary, after a few days. The problem should disappear after the third course—This health tip is as told by Sri Satya Sai Baba. (Taken from a book where Baba mentions this to a devotee named Pedda Bottu Amma). (Discontinue use if any uncomfortable symptoms appear. People who have gastric disturbances might not be able to tolerate this well).

■             Trailing Eclipta or Bringraj is a very common plant in India. Drink six-eight ml of leaves juice every day for BP to reduce significantly. This also reduces giddiness and sleeplessness symptoms in patients with high BP.

■             Make mixture of five pieces of dried amla, one spoon crushed dhania (coriander) seeds and 150g of water. Store it in a mud vessel overnight and filter it in the morning, mix with little candy sugar and drink. BP patients get giddiness due to the excess heat generated in the brain, drinking this for one week helps get relief from giddiness.

■             Make mixture of curry leaves and tender neem leaves powder and take ½ to one spoon with water. It also helps in preventing blood clotting and throwing out waste material out of blood.

■             Take tulsi leaves, curry leaves, pudina leaves, 100g each, dried in shade and powdered, jeera 50g roasted and dhania seeds, 50g roasted and powdered. Mix all the powders. Take ½ to one table spoon with water ½ an hour before food for 40 days. The heat reduces, impurities get eliminated from blood and the BP is controlled.
