Common Connections

Updated: July 13, 2011 5:17 pm

Do you know who Thomas Menamparampil is? He is Archbishop of Guwahati and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his initiatives to bring peace among ethnic communities of the North-East. And who has nominated him? It is also a very interesting fact. It is a popular Italian magazine Il Bollettino Salesiano, which also published a four-page story on Menamparampil in its June edition titled “A Bishop for Nobel Prize”. It is not a hidden fact that in the North-East, missionaries have created many problems. The most unstable states are almost 90 per cent converted into Christianity. Then what kind of peace efforts made the Bishop such an important entity? Can we find some common connections with someone very important in our political circle? The Archbishop is Roman Catholic and he is nominated by an Italian magazine. It is not hidden today who is Roman Catholic and of Italy origin.

Gag Order for Anna?

Gag order is not a big deal in the Congress. Whenever the party high command feels that someone is creating problems for the party, gag order is seen as the best solution. But nobody would have ever thought that it would also issue it against the non-Congress and apolitical persons like Anna Hazare too. Anna was showing that he was very hurt by the allegations of being an RSS agent by some senior Congress leaders. He tried to meet the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi. He also has some other complaints like government is not listening to his team and it is also ignoring the points suggested. But sources said when he finally met Sonia after having been denied once, he forgot to tell her about his complaints. He simply explained the suggestions his team has given to government. A senior party leader, who was also present there, commented later that perhaps there would be a gag order for Anna too.

Flickering hope

National President of BJP Nitin Gadkari is very fond of surveys. That is why before taking any decision regarding elections and leadership, he conducts surveys. This time the issue was Uttarakhand assembly elections and the survey result was very shocking. According to the survey, BJP could hardly cross the double figure in the state. It worried Gadkari so much that he organised many meetings in Uttarakhand. Even though two big figures from the state—BC Khanduri and BS Koshiyari—seem to be in a rebellious mood and the present CM Nishank does not have any strong mass base, the BJP decided to fight the election under the leadership of Nishank. Khanduri is almost ready to resign from the party. According to state analysts, the Congress is not strong enough to pose any serious threat to the BJP. So the BJP is hoping that it could win the election.

Tailpiece

Another reshuffle is scheduled in the central government and many leaders are waiting for ministerial birth. But it seems some ministers may be given organisational responsibilities. One of them is Union Foreign Affairs Minister SM Krishna. It is said that he may be sent to Karnataka as state president. The Congress is not in good condition there and it wants a strong leadership to challenge Yeddy government on corruption grounds.
