The Strawberry Health
Strawberry is more popular for its flavour in ice-creams, cakes, jellies, jams, biscuits, chocolates, squashes, etc., in India, than the fruit itself.
It is advisable to have strawberries for breakfast, as they have all the essential vitamins and minerals required for the body that keeps you energetic throughout the day. Eating them more often will add to a person’s overall long-term health.
They have the highest antioxidant power among all fruits and protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals. They contain highest levels of vitamin C, folate, fiber and potassium. Strawberries are filled with unsual phytonutrients that are extremely healthy for our body.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF STRAWBERRY
Brightens teeth: The flouride content in strawberries whitens the teeth, prevents dental problems and gives strength to the gums. Cut the fruit and rub the juice of the berries on your teeth and gargle with warm water and see the result for yourself.
Regulates Electrolytes: It is rich in potassium and regulates electrolytes in the body.
Protects the heart: High fiber, folate, no fat and antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids together, form an ideal cardiac health pack, as they efffectively reduce the cholesterol. All the other nutrients present in the berries make the heart muscle strong and help in proper functioning of the heart. The copper content in the berries helps reduce the bad cholesterol. Iron in the berries is absorbed for red blood cell formation.
Reduce weight: These berries are virtually fat-free. They suppress the appetite and stimulate metabolism. They also help to keep your weight-reducing hormones function properly.
Protects from cough and cold: Strawberries are full of vitamin C, a powerful natural antioxidant. Consumption of fruits rich in vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents, counter inflammation and scavenge harmful free radicals, thus protecting our body from common cold and other infections.
High BP: Strawberries are helpful in lowering the high blood pressure, owing to potassium and magnesium content in them. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure.
Enhances memory function: Memory loss and the control over the limbs is lost or lessened as we grow older (as we observe in old people). However, with the increased intake of strawberries, these problems can occur at a much slower pace. The free radicals, agents responsible for aging have adverse effect on brain and the nervous system. The brain tissues start degenerating and nerves get weaker. Iodine in strawberries is very helpful in proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system. Our system will effectively be rejuvenated by neutralising the effects of the oxidants in the body.
Arthritis and Gout: The degeneration of muscles and tissues, drying up of the fluid which helps mobility of the joints and accumulation of toxic substances and acids (such as uric acid) in the body are some of the ill-effects of free radicals present in our body, which are primarily responsible for Arthritis and Gout. Strawberries, with their team of antioxidants and detoxifiers, can effectively help push away such health hazards forever.
Protects the eyes: The primary reasons for all the problems of the eyes are free radicals and deficiency of certain nutrients. With growing age and lack of protective nutrients the harmful oxidants damage our eyes. Drying up of eyes, degeneration of optical nerve, vision defects, etc., to list a few. The antioxidants such as vitamin C and flavonoids, etc., present in strawberries help avoid this situation to a great extent. Another factor is the ocular pressure, i.e., the pressure of the eye. Any disturbance in it is also harmful for the eyes. The strawberries are helpful as they contain potassium, which helps maintain the right pressure.
In addition to having a very important nutritional value, with an abundance of antioxidants, strawberries have been used for centuries as a symbol of purity and longevity, and depending on cultures they prolong life.
Strawberries should be rinsed in hot water before eating, or else the small fiber on the fruit may cause irritation and allergic reaction.
