The Turmeric Protection
Turmeric root belongs to the ginger family and is very similar to ginger root. It had been in use for thousands of years in India as spice, medicine, beauty product and even for the purpose of colouring the clothes. It is believed that Buddhist Monks wore turmeric coloured clothes centuries back. Hindus use it for different religious purposes and no ritual is complete wthout turmeric. Let it be a marriage ceremony, thread ceremony or any other religious function.There is a special ‘Haldi’ function held in marriages which is supposed to be very auspicious. Before the start of any pooja Lord Ganesh is invoked in small triagular shaped haldi mixed with water and kept in a betel leaf. On festival days turmeric is applied to the threshold of the main entrance and decorates it with kumkum and rangoli. As many people visit the house on such occations turmeric keeps the house disinfected.
Turmeric powder is processed by different methods and it is widely used spice in India. It always stands by the side of salt and a pinch of it is administered in each and every cuisine along with salt whether it is dal, sabji, chutney or pickle.We use it very casually but it has got amazing health benefits. It has got vitamins, minerals and disease fighting agents in abundance. For the smooth functioning of different parts of our body the small particles of turmeric have antibiotic, anticancerous, anti-inflommatory, antitumorous and antioxidant properties in the form of hundreds and hundreds of mico particles. Turmeric root contain a chemical called ‘Curcumin’ by which it gets the orangish yellow colour. Research tells us that though turmeric contains only 3 to 5 percent of ‘Curcumin’, it plays an important role in maintaining the beauty and health of our body. Protects the Skin: Turmeric beautifies the body internally as well as externally. It cleanses the skin and naurishes it. Traditionally after applying oil to the body turmeric and besan is applied to exfoiate the skin. It is also applied along with badam oil, cream and honey to beautify the skin. For toothache, wounds, swelling turmeric acts as a pain reliever as it has the properties of analgesic. Pimples and other spots can be removed with turmeric. Married women apply to their feet to protect them from skin and other water born infections.
Good as First Aid: It can be used as first aid as it helps to stop the bleeding from injury. If mentally disturbed due to some accident or some other incident, 2 spoons of turmeric and 2 spoons of ghee added to a cup of hot milk gives relief from mental tension to some extent. Turmeric helps all the parts of the body to function properly.
Protects the Digestive System: Turmeric reduces the gas in stomach and in digestive system. It protects the digestive engymes from harmful foods. 2 spoons of turmeric if taken with rice or milk give relief from the bleeding of rectum. Decentry and blood in the motion can be stopped by taking 10g or 2 spoons of turmeric added to a cup of curd. There is an old belief that turmeric, mustard oil and onion extract mixed together and applied on piles gives some relief.
Protects the Liver: It protects the liver from the poisonous foods. Turmeric and curcumin have been shown to be especially useful in increasing the bile flow in infected bile ducts. Those who are addicted to alcohol can protect their liver by drinking 5g of turmeric added to a glass of water or buttermilk on empty stomach for a month.
Protects the Respiratory System: It protects the respiratory system from pollution and other poisonous and harmful agents. Add 5 gm turmeric and one spoon ghee to a glass of Luke warm water and drink before going to bed to get relief from cough and asthma. It is very effective if the root form (Raw turmeric) is available. Add one spoon turmeric, little jeera and lassun to a spoon of ghee, heat it and inhale to get the best results out of the medicine you are using for bronchitis. Turmeric helps to regulate menstrual cycle in women and protects from all sorts of pains during menstruation. In women it prevents the forming of a tumor in the uterus and even protects from breast cancer. Reduces bad cholesterol in the blood and protects heart from diseases. The antioxidants present in turmeric makes the immune system stronger and prevent the diseases from entering the body.
Protects from Cancer: Turmeric prevents lung, breast, uterus and mouth cancers cells to enter the body. It helps the body to fight against the cancers by creating such situation in the body that it does no allow the cancer cells to enter the body. It even destroys the tumors in the body. Studies have proved that it efficiently wipes off the cancer cells as it contain a chemical called ‘Curcumin’ which can destroy the cancer cells within 24 hours. It not only heals bruises but has got the power to fight against infections and protects the body. Curcumin helps the normal functioning of the liver by fighting against the damaging psoriasis disease cells and keeps the liver cells healthy. It removes the obstacles in the bile duct. Not many of us would be aware that very ordinery turmeric plays such an important role in protecting our body internally as well as externally.
