Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has given a bonanza to Members of Parliament by increasing their Local Area Development funds from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore. However, there has been a lot of debate on the misuse of funds and many political leaders are in the favour of abolishing it. Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar’s decision of abolishing the Local Area Development funds to MLAs is seen as a way forward in this direction. But Congress thinks that it is a kind of allurement for MPs and this will bind them to the party more effectively. One very vocal spokesperson of Congress said that now no MP will risk his seat for any issue. This will also ensure that there is no problem for the government. He said that even if an MP gets only 20 per cent commission, which has almost become official nowadays, still it is a big amount and no one will want to lose that.
This is the second term of UPA and once again women’s reservation bill has been relegated to the back burner in the lower house of Parliament. When UPA returned to power, it claimed with proud that it got passed the women’s reservation bill in Rajya Sabha and the UPA was set to write a history in the Parliament. But that history is still waiting for its turn and UPA seems to be careless. Even the BJP is hardly paying any attention to the women’s reservation bill. It was seen in the house when Jaya Prada, MP of Samajvadi Party, raised the issue of women’s reservation bill, no one, including the Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, paid any attention and her voice went unheard.
Be-Imaan Indian Munni became Bad-Naam too in Laos. It happened thus–this lady journalist was in Laos with some union ministers for an India Promotion Programme. In the programme, there was a fashion show. In that show, the clothes on the models became shorter and shorter. Seeing this, one cabinet minister got so annoyed that he left the programme. After sometime, he was told that the vulgar programme was over and another programme on Bollywood theme was going on. He came and saw that the same lady journalist was on the stage singing Munni Bad-Naam Hui, Darling Tere Liye. One minister commented, “Munni was Be-Imaan in India and now she has become Bad-Naam too.
