Sonia’s somersault

Updated: February 19, 2011 11:11 am

UPA president Sonia Gandhi’s absence was conspicuous on the Republic Day celebration. She also did not attend the dinner party hosted by President Pratibha Patil. The clarification for her absence was given the health reason. But the sources claimed that it was due to the widening differences between 10, Janpath and 1, Race Course Road. It is said that Manmohan Singh is no longer the favourite of Sonia Gandhi and preparation for his replacement is also in the process. It is also said that is why he is left alone on the issue of CVC Commissioner PJ Thomas’ appointment. The second member of the three-member panel constituted for the selection of CVC Commissioner, P Chidambaram has taken a U-turn on the issue saying that the matter of scam Thomas was charged with was discussed in the panel. However, earlier the government had denied it. Thus, Manmohan Singh is left alone to face the heat on the issue.

Repressive regime?

Power corrupts everyone and this is substantiated by the JD (U)-BJP coalition, which came back to power second time in Bihar. Although the coalition government is being praised everywhere for its development works, good governance and the changes it had made in the state, this is the one side of the coin. The other side is vile. It is alleged that today media is most terrorised in Bihar. A journalist of a reputed agency, working in Patna, said that whenever they run any headlines in which Opposition blames the government for something, warning calls started to pour in their office immediately after the release of the news. They are threatened to face serious consequences, i.e. their office will be burnt; their machines and other equipments will be thrown out. This is really a shocker, as the Nitish Kumar government is otherwise known for putting the state back on the track of law and order.

Voracity for power

The deputy CM of Bihar Sushil Kumar Modi is looking very desperate for protecting the coalition with JD(U), and hence the power he is enjoying for being in government. For this, he can sacrifice his own party’s principles. It was seen that during the recent Ekta Yatra of BJYM voices of dissent had been raised in the NDA. JD(U) leaders had shown their unhappiness over the issue. Senior JD(U) leader and CM of Bihar Nitish Kumar had also made a comment against the Yatra. Though the central leadership of BJP had decided to avoid that comment, its state president of Jharkhand Dineshanand Goswami had reacted that both the BJP and JD(U) have their own political agenda and it is not necessary to comment on each other’s agenda. While Nitish ignored this reaction, Sushil Kumar Modi reacted furiously saying that Goswami should mind his own business and should not interfere in others’ affairs.

Tailpiece

Congress has a good history of flattery. Everyone in Congress is busy in Ganesh Parikrama. It was seen once again when Congress leaders of Odisha gathered to pay tribute to the great freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai at Sambalpur. Senior State Congress leaders, including state president KP Singhdeo, were present at the function. After garlanding the statue of Veer Surendra Sai, they chanted the name of Veer Surendra Sai and then started to chant the names of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders. They were so busy in chanting the names of Congress leaders that they forgot to chant the name of Veer Surendra Sai for even second time. This scene left the people and the journalists present there speechless.
