Rightly said that the mango is the king of all the fruits. Come summer the markets are flooded with variety of mangoes, in different colours, flavours, shapes and sizes. They dominate at vegetable venders as well as fruit sellers.
There are many varieties of mangoes available in India. Alphonso, langda, safeda, totapuri, banginapalli (Andhra) are very popular amongst other varieties. Each state has its own popular variety of mangoes.
Mango is not only a delicious fruit to relish but it has some health benefits as well. It has all the essential vitamins and minerals required for the body.
- It is rich in fibre and contains 40 per cent of the daily fibre required for the body. It also contains an enzyme with stomach soothing properties found in papaya.
- It is beneficial for eyes as it contains Vitamin A
- Prevents breast, colon and Prostrate cancers.
- Mango fruit contain Vitamin A, B-6, Vitamin C and E.
- Vitamin A, a rich source of (Beta Carotene) and Vitamin E which helps to protects against heart disease and E helps hormonal system function more efficiently.
- Potassium in mango regulates heart beat and contraction of muscle and blood pressure.
- Taking a cup of mango juice with 25g curd and one table spoon ginger juice twice a day can help improve concentration and memory.
- Mangoes are considered to be very low in calories but quite high in natural sugar.
- Mango contains a lot of glutamine acid an important agent to control loose motions.
- Boil 20gms of powder of mango bark in a liter of water and reduce it to 250gms. Add black salt (Kala Namak). Taking this at regular intervals can cure diarrhea.
- Dried mango seeds powdered can be used as tooth-powder, which can strengthen the gums and helps curing dental problems. Added with fresh water this powder can cure the habit of eating soil in children.
- Paste of mango roots applied on palm and soles can cure fever.
- Burnt ash of mango leaves applied on burns gives quick relief.
- Dry and powder mango leaves and store in a bottle. 10 gms or one table spoon of powder a day (kept in water over night in a glass) helps in throwing the stones out from kidney.
- On all the auspicious occasions and functions Hindus use the mango leaves to ward off the evil and to bring godwill to them. Mango leaves are considered very auspicious.
Mango juice blended with milk and sugar makes delicious Mango shake. Raw mango juice aam panna is very beneficial for heart stroke. Steam cook raw Mangoes at night leave it in water overnight. Take out the seed and squeeze the juice and make fine juice. Add sugar or sugar candy to it along with little black pepper and store it in a cool place. If taken a small glass of it before leaving home one can be protected from the heat and dehydration due to loss of water.
Mango is used in ice creams, Jams and ice candies.
Mango chutney and pickles are very popular. And pickles are preserved for years.
Raw mangoes are dried and made powder and preserved as aamchur.
Mango Fruit pulp is made into aam papad. These are made in season when mango is available and preserved for the whole year.
Mango fruit should be eaten without adding anything but wash thoroughly in running cold water to wash off dust and pesticide residue.
Thus not only mango but all the parts of the tree are very useful to mankind.
