Over 17 lakh people affceted by current wave of floods in Assam

In Assam, around 17 lakh 50 thousand people in 26 districts have been affceted by the current wave of floods. Several rivers are flowing above the danger level.

Apart from residential areas, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries are also reeling under the fury of flood. Participating in an AIR talk show, Forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma said that 134 camps of the Kaziranga national park are submerged.

She said 32 animals including three rhino calves drowned to death in flood. The minister said that drone is being used effectively to prevent poaching at Kaziranga. As of now, 90 animals have been rescued safely. Ms.Brahma said that additional forces have been deployed at Kaziranga.

Water Resource minister Keshab Mahanta arrived in Majuli last night to take stock of the situation. He held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner.
